Stuck with a Transferring Shares Between Accounts problem
Hello,
I've read the old and closed posts from 2021 on this subject but will need to ask this as a new question. For reference; Show Hidden Transactions is checked. I've run a validate with no errors on this issue. Software (Deluxe) is up-to-date R50.16.
My standard IRA account was transferred to a Brokerage IRA within Vanguard. I did the TSBA function using the All option and everything transferred properly but one mutual fund. I had previously closed the standard IRA account in Quicken and had gone back to correctly do the transfer sometime after the Vanguard download (Oct 28 '22).
There is a Placeholder in the standard IRA account for that MF with five transactions, all the data is correct - no changes. The placeholder happens to start with a transaction that was a conversion of shares from one symbol to another. There are many more reinvested dividends in the register after the few that are part of the placeholder transactions and the share balance is correct. I can't clear the placeholder. The shares and all the reinvested dividend history has been added to the new Brokerage IRA. It's also in the old standard IRA, due to the placeholder - not removed. The symbol for this MF won't add to the security list except on a transaction by transaction basis - it won't stick despite the fact I still have shares.
I feel like the only option is to print/save a report of the old IRA register (since 2010) for this MF and save it for future reference then delete the old IRA account. If there are any other ideas before I do that, I'm interested.
Thanks in advance
Karen

Let’s start here
everything transferred properly but one mutual fund.
What went wrong with that one mutual fund transfer? The TSBA function should have generated one Remove Shares in the old account and a series of Add Shares creating the entire holding in the new account. What part is or was missing? Are you saying the placeholder in the old (standard) account was the problem?
I think I am beginning to understand your situation, but would like to be sure before speculating too much

Yes, I believe the placeholder was the problem. The shares were left in the old account. I've been working on this for many hours over a bunch of days. I tried different things. One was to use the "Estimate Average Cost" function in the placeholder - no change and other issues that I fixed. After writing up my final straw question to the community, I looked at my register in the old account and there was a new placeholder there with an Est. Avg Cost transaction. I deleted it and boom - the shares were finally Removed from the old account and now it is fine. That placeholder was not in the Enter Missing Transactions window and I don't recall it in the register after showing hidden transactions in preferences. I can only think it might have to do with me editing the account details to unhide the account in the account bar - a final shot I decided to do.
Another note on the security not coming up, I checked the list this morning and clicked to show hidden and somehow the MF was clicked to Hide. I didn't do that so it might have happened when closing the account before I began fixing the transition to the new account. Does that make sense - it could happen?
I'm all good now but will say this process was a little buggy unless you know exactly how everything needs to be just right.
Thanks so much for your attention to my problem.

I am not surprised that the placeholder prevented the TSBA function from working for that security. I dislike placeholders so I keep them out of my accounts. My advice would have been to delete the placeholder replacing it with whatever necessary Add Shares transactions with whatever cost basis values would work. That may be what your ventures with estimating cost basis did.
The hidden security? I would not think closing the account would hide any securities in the account. Does not seem logical to me. But who knows. May try an experiment later (or not).
