How do I copy transactions from an account in one file to an account in another file?

I'd like to copy transactions from an account in one quicken file to an account in another quicken file. Is this possible, and if so, how do I do it? I'm running Quicken R51.12 Build 27.1.51.12 on Windows 11 Home edition. I do not want to copy all the transactions or all the accounts, just the transactions I've selected.

    I'd try doing a File→File Export→QIF File and then do a File→File Import→QIF File.

You can restrict the export to a single account.

WARNING: DO A QUICKEN BACKUP OF THE DESTINATION FILE FIRST IN CASE YOU DON'T LIKE THE RESULTS.

Is the destination file a new file or an existing file?

  • The destination file is an old file - that is already created with lots of transactions.

Also - be aware that any attributes with each old transaction may not exist in the destination Quicken file … Category, Tags, Transfers, etc…

  • Thanks for the help. I did the *.qif export / import with success, though on the import Quicken chose to assign what it thought were the best categories to the transactions. (I hate the canned categories that Quicken includes. I deleted them all from my own file - but in this case was importing to another person's file as a favor. Luckily I was only dealing with a couple of dozen transactions)

The reason I was doing this is the great frustration I have with ,qfx file imports. Many is the time I download a qfx file from a financial institution, then attempt to import it only to find that nothing happens. So now what I do is create a brabd new Quicken file with only one account and no transactions. I then import the qfx file into that file & account successfully. I then export those transactions as a qif file, then import them into the real destination file. A convoluted way to do it - it would be much better is Quicken would properly import a qfx file, or give error messages if it doesn't work.

I do Web Connect (.QFX) file imports for all of my non-investment accounts and do not experience the issues you report. Quicken will not import the same transaction twice into an account based on the FITID field in the download to prevent duplicate transactions.

The source that is generating your .QFX file might be generating FITIDs that are not unique for a given transaction. You could view the .QFX file and then look at the reference number field in the register to see if they are repeating.
