Opening Balance discrepancies

Looking back in these discussions I see I am not alone: Quicken seems to randomly change my opening balance on my checking account. I see numerous people asking about this and all they've gotten is that it's a common bug. Great.

I've used Quicken since 1994, and never had this problem until it went to the subscription model. I don't download transactions, as I found that was wildly inaccurate.

I use WIndows 11, and R52.33 build 27.1.52.33

I reconcile every month, and have done so for all these years. So when there was first a discrepancy I just did an adjusting entry, but I can look at my previous statements and see that the opening balance the program is showing is simply a fantasy of the program. Is there any chance of fixing this??

just a comment - when this bug first appeared - we suggested that folks go thru all their accounts,
and look at the Opening Balance and copy that amount into the Memo field of that transactions….
for safe keeping in case it gets randomly changed in the future -

So - for any wild balance mismatches or weird reconciles - - go look at the Opening Balance and see if it got changed -

With you saying that you don't download transactions, and I assume that you aren't using sync to Mobile/Web it becomes a real mystery of why your opening balance would be changed.

Being a bug there isn't any real telling of what might happen, but this bug usually does have a logical source.

Here is the situation, you add a new online account to Quicken. If the complete history is available, then the opening balance is zero. But what if the full history isn't available? The opening balance isn't part of the downloaded data, but what is part of the downloaded data is the current one. Quicken takes that balance and back calculates the opening balance based on the transactions it got during the initial download of the transactions and then sets the first transaction to this opening balance.

The "main bug" of this type is Quicken doing the processing when it shouldn't, changing an existing opening balance. The main times this tends to come up is when resetting an online account or maybe when deactivating and reactivating. And another possible time is when the syncing to Mobile/Web gets messed up.

Outside of this I don't know why such a behavior should be triggered.

I’d say not until it gets clearly established what is causing the problem. To date, I don’t think this user community has done that (not that it is their responsibility). Quicken Inc’s status on the cause is an unknown. For most users, it has been attributed to downloading transactions. You seem to be an exception. Connecting via Quicken mobile is another questionable activity.
