Different names for same ticker symbol?

I just transferred some shares from one account to another (different brokerage) and they renamed the stocks differently. Ticker symbols are unchanged of course. Quicken created a new security for all of these stocks with the slightly different names. Now the account appears to have duplicate investments in the same ticker symbol. Why doesn't Quicken just work by ticker symbol rather than the description? Adding a new security through Quicken gives yet another name.
Is there a way to combine these two sames into the same ticker symbol, and will Quicken continue to make entries based upon the name rather than the symbol for a given security?
A similar question has been asked in the MAC group, but I do not see this answered for Windows.
