Why was duplicate account created?

Using Quicken Classic Premier for Windows Version R55.15 Build 27.1.55.15.

A couple of weeks ago I added my American Express credit card to my Quicken accounts and set up online access. Everything worked fine. Then this morning I did one step updated and, magically, a duplicate account for that credit card appeared. Same account ID with " 2" added. All transactions are duplicated. There are only 2 transactions: a charge and a payment. Not a lot of activity on the account.

Questions are:

  1. Why would that happen?
    1. Would there be anything in some log that I could look at to determine what happened?
  2. Would it be safe to simply delete the duplicate account?

Thanks

Jim

Correction: all transactions are not duplicated. The original account has an opening balance of 0, a charge for $81.17 and a payment for $81.17. The duplicate account has an opening balance of $81.17 and a payment for $81.17. The two payments look different in the transaction list. In the original account, the payment is by check which I marked as a transfer to the credit card account. In the duplicate account, the payment simply appears as a credit with category of "Credit Card Payment."
