Why to pay for a subscription?

The ONLY reason I upgraded to Deluxe is because Basic won't let me create an account for the one loan I had. I don't use the online services and I can back up my file if I don't have access to the cloud. So how do they justify giving me no choice but to be pay for a subscription every year? I don't mind paying for an upgrade every 2 or 3 years, as it used to be and why can't I have that option now?

You don't have to pay and renew. But if you don't then there will be a banner to renew taking up about 25% of your screen. And the Starter version will go into read only mode.
I'm staying on Quicken 2013 Premier for Windows.
