Investment Placeholders
I’d like to get some input about placeholder entries. In three of my accounts (all the same investment custodian) I am showing placeholder entries (unentered at this point) that are showing dates in 2017 and 2018. In the past, I was able to “Delete all” when there were placeholders showing that I knew were not legitimate. In most cases these occur because Quicken has downloaded one part of a two-part transaction, and the next day everything balances out – without fooling with placeholders!
Please note that these are not placeholders that have been sitting there since 2017 and 2018. They have shown up recently and I have no intent of going back and redoing any entries from 2017 or 2018 when my current account balances and holdings match up perfectly with the investment custodian.
My issue is that “Delete all” does not appear to work. At least not work properly. In fact, I cannot even delete one at a time. I attempted to delete them and nothing appeared to happen. I then went to another account with fewer placeholders and attempted there. Nothing. When I went back to the first account, the placeholders (in the unentered section of the page) were gone. However, my ending balance in the account had changed and strange balances were shown in the “Holdings” listing for several funds.
Luckily I had a backup Quicken file I reverted to, and of course now have my unentered placeholders back. Is it best to just allow the placeholders to sit there unentered and accumulate in the “Placeholder Entries” section rather than try to delete them? BTW, these are tax-deferred accounts, so I’m not worried about capital gains or losses.
TIA!
