How to replace the security identification for a holding

I installed the latest Quicken Deluxe for Windows release (R57.26 HF2) and I downloaded investment activity in several accounts from different brokerages. One account had a purchase for a new ETF and I selected add a new security rather than use an existing symbol from the asset list. Worked fine. Then I noticed a few minutes later than in a different brokerage's account, which had no new activity, that the new security identification had been applied to an existing holding (replacing the existing holding's name and symbol). I noticed this change mainly because the price was vastly different for this new security than the one I owned, which vastly overstated the account value.

What is the best/easiest way to fix my problem, i.e. to change the security name and symbol back to the original one, hopefully without having the eliminate the new security?

That doesn't sound to me like it worked fine.

The 'easiest' way may be a matter of opinion. I would:

    • Choose the security with the least number of transactions and for each of those transactions edit the name to be different than the other. This will (or should) create a new security.
    • Once all those are changed, you can change each security name to be as unique and distinct as you choose. (Edit Security Details).
    • While editing the names, also make sure the ticker symbols are correct for each one. If you choose to change a ticker, you'll get the prompt to copy and/or delete the prices associated with prior ticker. Choose accordingly.
    • As a last point, I would uncheck the 'Matched with online security" box for each security. I would then from the account transaction list, choose the action item to reconcile Shares. That should allow you to properly match the securities from each brokerage to the correct security in your file for future downloads.
    • If you need to fill in historical prices, you can do so from the Security Detail views.

A wholly different option - if you have a recent backup, you could restore the backup and try the downloads and security creations again.

Thank you. I reviewed things and it turned out there were more accounts and transactions affected than I thought before so I have restored from the back up made before the program update, so now R57.16. Same thing happened again, though. In a completely different account I had a new purchase and after I clicked add new security to the security list, the same mutual fund in the other account was replaced yet again only this time with the new asset, which was a different one from before. Is there some kind of bug in the program that is screwing this up now when a new asset is added?

I am not aware of any specific bug creating that type of problem. It appears to me that your file is corrupted. You may get it fixed by a File Validation and repair but no guarantees on that front.
