How come there's no ability to do a spending comparison between COMPARABLE time periods?
Wouldn't it be quite helpful to a lot of users to be able to do a comparison of year-to-date spending to the SAME PERIOD the previous year, for example 1/1 - 8/15/24 compared to 1/1 - 8/15/23 (or two other comparable periods for that matter). This would be your personal inflation gauge among other uses.
There's a lot of reporting pastry in the Quicken application while this suggested piece of steak is missing. I guess there's some impediment in the basic architecture of the report engine that would make two custom dates for comparison a big challenge? Otherwise there's no plausible excuse for the lack of this capability.
I've been waiting for this capability since 1992. I don't have that many more years to live.

Try running the report at Reports > Comparison > Income/Expense comparison by Category. Set the desired date range, Year to date for example, and the Compare to: to Prior Year period.
Isn't that what you are looking for?

@Jim_Harman My bad and thank you very much. That does the trick. In cross checking the results of the comparison report you cited against Itemized Category reports I found the account defaults in the comparison report oddly exclude Investment and Property and Debt accounts. No matter. After customizing the comparison report to include all accounts the results match Itemized Categories. Again, thanks much.
