Issues with matching transactions

I have accounts in both Bank of America and Chase that seem to be experiencing these problems. I've searched existing discussions for Quicken Classic but was unable to find anything that seemed to be the same as my symptoms

  1. Red flags appear next to the account. When I click on that account, the red flags disappear and there are no transactions that were downloaded.
  2. This morning, only one of the transactions in one account automatically matched. I double checked the date and amount, which what normally seems to make the transaction match even if the merchant name was exactly the same. I went through the list and manually matched each transaction.
  3. When matching transactions, I sometimes find an error that I made. When I open the transaction and change it. Now, there is no longer a button at the bottom to complete the matching process. If I click on a different account and then come back to original one, the completion button is there.

The phantom flag problem has been happening for months while the matching problem just started. I understand that these might be three separate items but and combined them to see if they are somehow connected.

In previous discussions, there was a hint about turning off auto fill. That option does not exist in my copy of Quicken Classic.

"Red flags appear next to the account. When I click on that account, the red flags disappear and there are no transactions that were downloaded."

This has been associated with the "Automatic entry is:On" feature on the Online Services tab of the Account Details window. Check each Account for this feature and turn it off. I really have no idea if Automatic entry being on is associated with the matching issue, but it might be.

Red flags can also show up in Accounts if you've allowed for Pending Transactions to be downloaded. Those Pending Transactions won't show up as actual transactions but you can see them if you click on the downloaded "Online balance" below the Register.

Thank you for your information. You were correct. There were pending transactions in those accounts.

But that opened up my recognition of a much greater problem with pending transactions. I have several accounts where were closed, most of them more than 5 years ago. All had zero balances at the time they were closed. Now, several of them have balances in the negative thousands of dollars AND they have pending transactions against those accounts where are duplicate transactions from current accounts.. If that isn't bizarre enough, one of those closed accounts was a savings account. The first transaction was a deposit. The register total field is negative for that deposit.

In a probably unrelated matter, I was not able to balance my primary Bank of America checking account this month. It balanced last month. The deposits and withdrawals from the statement matched the deposits and withdrawals in Quicken for the period but the account was suddenly $2,100 less than it should be. I went back for the past two years and could find no single transaction to fix the problem. Out of desperation, I went back to the opening of the account and adjusted the opening balance to fix the current problem. This transaction was in the year 2000. Now my checking account balances with the BOA statement and all of the previous statements back two years are again correct. I don't know where in the account's history the errors were introduced but I could find nothing wrong in the past 5 years. Why oh why are historical transaction histories being altered? Given the mismatching of transactions to accounts which have had no actual transactions in more than five years it appears that the Quicken data base is not only corrupted but that the corruption is continuing.
