Many of us experience duplicate downloads. These take hours of time to fix, for me. Someone pointed out you can see the FITID column, and the FITID is how Quicken knows a duplicate.
When I look at duplicates in my register, it appears that quicken missed the last character of the FITID in some case. Here is an example:
- 7427981FY31VTY529V~20240419000001
- 7427981FY31VTY529~20240419000001
As you can see, the "V" before the tilde was lost. The bank statement has the "V". I also noticed that this is an entry that was converted from EURO to USD by the bank, and on the bank statement there are multiple lines. My suspicion is that Quicken gets multiple lines that differ because the bank is being clever, and tagging this transaction in different ways for the different currencies. That is, the ID code is tracking the original purchase price (in EUR) and the USD actual charge (in USD). Quicken isn't recognizing that. Just a guess.
I also notice that the SYNC ID for two entries will be different.
What is clear, is that Quicken should be checking for transactions that differ by one character before a code break (the tilde clearly divides the code into two parts). My guess is that 99.999% of the time, if there is one character difference, the transactions are duplicates.
See attached image: I just figured out that Quicken can find "V~" inside these codes. So, I searched for "V~" and now I have a list of possible duplicates. Next, I tag them all as "duplicate". Sort by FITID. Look for "duplicate" tagged entries followed by untagged entries. If the amount is the same, check the FITID — if it differs only by the "V~" then you have found a duplicate entry.
By the way, the "~" is NOT a tilde from the "n" key. It is the tilde to the left of the "1" key on the top of the keyboard (shift-`).
Please fix this, Quicken! I lose hours trying to reconcile accounts!
