2017 Quicken on Mac. I can't import my recovered Quicken files onto my new computer.

I have 2017 Quicken on our new Mac Mini…we got it from a Time Machine backup from Jan 2024. Problem is, we need to find a way to get the Quicken data from right before our old iMac died in September 2024.

We sent our old iMac hard drives out to be recovered in late Sept 2024, and have no idea what to look for in the recovered files in terms of getting our Sept 2024 Quicken data back up and running.

Can anyone help us?

A call to Quicken wasn't very helpful bc they told my husband that the recovered data would have the .qdf extension. There are no files on the recovered files ending in .qdf.

We have a couple files ending in .qdfm, but when we attempt to open them with Quicken 2017, we get the following error messages.

File 1 error msg:

"Could not import "Copy of Kerry's Quicken.qdfm"
The Data File is missing. This file cannot be opened.

OK"

File 2 error msg:

"Could not import "Copy of Kerry's Quicken.qdfm"

The resource fork is missing.

If you copied this file from another computer, try creating a .zip archive of the original file and copying the .zip file instead. After copying the .zip file to this computer, you can unzip the original file by double-clicking the .zip file."

OK"

The QDF extension is for Quicken Windows files. Look for a file ending in ".quicken"

But, I've only been on QMac (vs QWin) for a few years now. A superuser such as @jacobs might be able to provide better information.

    Thanks, Montana Karl.

So for clarification, .QDF is for Windows, and .Quicken is for Mac? Do you know what .qdfm is?

A QDFM file is a Quicken Mac 2007 (or earlier) file. It's possible to import those into modern Quicken but it's almost certainly not the file you're looking for if you were using Quicken Mac 2017.

Quicken Mac 2017 was still incorporating the year into the file extension, so you'd be looking for files ending in ".quicken2017". By default these files would have been stored in the Library/Application Support/Quicken 2017 folder in your user home directory.

I found that file and opened it. A quick pop up appeared asked if I want to convert to certain versions, but before reading all of it, it disappears and opens quicken. The file that opens is only updated since Jan. this year which is the one backup we had already. I am opening the file from Sept. that was restored and sent back to us.

    Hey Jon and Montana Karl,

My husband figured it out! He's not exactly sure, but he thinks that copying the Sept 2024 Quicken copy from the recovered files over to our Desktop, and then opening that file in Quicken did it. Super simple! Almost too simple! So simple that it took way too long to figure out! LOL!

But we appreciate your answers in trying to help us out…glad to have gotten it back…and we'll be sure to make regular back ups from now on.

    Thanks again!
