Credit Card Payment Transaction won't let me rename payment

I enter transactions from downloaded credit cards manually. I rename the ones that aren't clear, or to my liking. This works fine. But the monthly transaction for the payment is always "Automatic Payment". I always change it my own named transaction, and yet next month, there it is again. It doesn't even ask me about renaming rules, like it does any other time I rename a transaction. This is ONLY for the payment transaction. Making it even worse, the one it uses every time has a Category of the same account, which makes no sense, it should be my checking account.

It does this for all my credit card accounts (several of them). How do I change this behavior? Also, this started about 3-6 months ago, but I'm finally irritated enough to ask about it. AFAIK, nothing else has changed—same laptop, same accounts, same everything. It simply started one day.

Thanks.

Have you looked into Renaming Rules? These would allow you to rename a downloaded Payee Name to something more useful.
However, if multiple accounts download using the same name and you want/need to rename to something account-specific, it might be better if you did the following. Renaming Rules apply to all banking registers, not just one.

    • For each of your credit cards set up a Scheduled Transfer Reminder transaction for the monthly payment. Use the desired Payee Name, e.g., "Costco Visa Payment", "Chase Amazon Payment".
    • On or before Due Date, whenever you know the new statement balance of each payment record the scheduled reminder, to turn it into a linked transfer transaction in your registers.
    • When you download transactions from each bank or credit card and the payment transaction arrives, Quicken should be able to match the downloaded transaction to the already existing register transaction (which is categorized correctly as a transfer) and not cause any more problems.

Thanks for the reply! It's Renaming Rules that won't work. And it used to.

BUT… your reply got me thinking, and I went to Mem Trans to see what it showed, and there were all my Auto-Pay Renaming Rules. But somehow, they were all changed to DEPOSIT. Which obviously I never did, so at some point, Quicken decided to do this, some bug in an update at some point. And they were locked, so they never matched, and never updated. I changed them all back to PAYMENT and unlocked them.

We'll see if that fixes it. And thanks again for your reply!
