Quicken Mac Update to 8.01 Unable to Read Converted Data File

Quicken Windows Subscription Member ✭✭

Quicken Classic V7.10.1 (Canada) running fine on my iMac running macOS Sequoia 15.2. I was prompted to and downloaded V8.01. After opening it needed to convert my data file. OK. When it tried to open that file, I received the message that it could not open the data file. At the time I sent an error report through the program itself.
This was not the first time, as a couple of weeks ago, when V8.0 was released I had to do the same thing. I would have thought V8.01 had resolved.
I had to revert to V7.10.1 by deleting the V8 version from the Applications folder and replacing it with the program file that was in the Trash. Thankfully the program works with my data file again.
Contacting support through chat is a vicious circle, and I can't find a way to contact technical support chat. The only option I see is for sales.
Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.

    Hello @GordW,

Let's work on resolving this together. The issue you describe sounds a lot like an issue that happened when version 7.10 came out. Do you password protect your Quicken file? If you do, please try restoring a backup from before the update, remove the password on your file, then update your Quicken for Mac to the latest version and test to see if the file conversion issue persists. You can add or remove your file password by going to Quicken>Settings, then clicking on Security.

Please let me know how it goes!

Thanks for your offer to assist.
I do not password protect my Quicken data file.

    Thank you for your reply,

Since you don't password protect your file, that eliminates any sort of encryption issue.

The next most likely cause of the issue you're encountering would be a file-specific problem. To troubleshoot, please restore a backup from just before the update, with that newly restored file open, try updating your Quicken to the latest version.

Please let me know if the issue persists!

    Steps taken…
    Restore previously saved data file.
    Update Quicken Classic (to 8.01).
During reopening, Quicken indicates it is converting data file.
After reopening, the same error occurs. (See attachment).
I will be reverting back to V7.10.1

    Next suggestion?

SUCCESS!!! After updating Quicken to V8.01 (and the data file would not open), from V8.01 I restored the backup from V7.10.1 AND IT WORKED!

Thank you for getting me thinking in the right direction.

Please re-open or start a new discussion based on "Quicken Mac 7.10 – Can't open file - Due to lack of space" that was active in November 2024. We are experiencing the exact same thing today trying to update to 8.0 that we experienced in November trying to update to 7.10.

You can refer to my notes on that thread under my user name Len Meyer.

    Thank you.

Please post a link to that other discussion, @Len Meyer . You've marked your profile as "private" so none of us can click on your name to bring up any information on your past posts in order to find and read that, or to share it with others here.

Also, as you no doubt know, this is not technical support - although Quicken staff monitor and typically respond. Technical support is via phone. (Obviously Help > Report a Problem doesn't work since you can't open the file.)

@MontanaKarl and others - here is the link to the closed discussion regarding this subject when the 7.10 upgrade was in play last November. Getting the same results today attempting to upgrade to 8.0.

I have the exact problem and it turns out I had to turn off google cloud backup first. Then I open the 7.10.1 file and it successfully updated it to 8.0.1 version.

I worked with the Quicken team who suggested I turn off syncing my Quicken file with Google Cloud during the upgrade. That did the trick. I am now fully operational on 8.0.1. Thank you all.

Ahhh! Once again the Sync Quicken data file to third party cloud service provider rears its ugly head.

IMHO, it might be much better if you excluded the current data file permanently from Google Cloud. At the end of every day close Quicken and let it create a backup. Afterwards allow Google Cloud to process this backup file.

@UKR - yes, that makes a ton of sense. Thank you!

    Hello @Len Meyer,

Thank you for coming to the Community to let us know about this! I merged this discussion with the existing discussion on the issue.

While the symptoms are the same as the previous issue, the root cause seems to be different from the issue reported with the upgrade to 7.10.

This current issue has been forwarded to the proper channels for further investigation and resolution. Thank you for already sending a problem report with log files attached.

    Thank you!

I really can't believe this. I've been struggling to get my data file to open first in 7.10, then 7.10.1, then 8.0 and finally 8.0.1. I've reported the problem each time to Quicken Support who collected data files. Now I find out that the problem all along was Google Sync? For almost three months I've been monitoring the alert waiting for an update. I've called probably 3-4 times reporting the problem when all along it was a simple fix by pausing Google Sync. I can't believe how poor Quicken Support has been on this issue. But at least it's resolved.

    @Quicken Kristina
Is this the same problem that is causing me not to be able to open a quicken data file with the extension ".quicken"?
I use quicken for mac. I saved this file in Quicken Classic 7 and have not been able to open it on a new mac under the legacy quicken classic 7 OR my new quicken classic premier latest-version 8. I keep getting the error message that an unexpected error occurred while decrypting the file (see screenshot of message below)
How can I open this file please?

    Hello @EllesBelles,

Thank you for letting us know you're encountering an issue opening your file. If you use Google Cloud Backup on your computer, please try turning it off or pausing it while opening the file.

If the issue persists and your file is password protected, try opening it in the last build of Quicken that worked. You can download previous versions of Quicken for Mac by using this article (note: you would need to uninstall the current version in order to install a previous version).

If you can open the file in the previous version of Quicken, then please try removing the password by going to Quicken>Settings and clicking on Security. If there is no password, it will look like the image below. If there is a password, you should see an option to remove it.

Once you have removed the password, make a backup of that non-password protected file, then update your Quicken to the current version and try restoring the backup you just made.

If you are unable to open the file, even in a previous version of Quicken, then that may indicate the file itself is the problem. If that is the case, try opening a different backup, if possible.

    I hope this helps!
