Expired call or put options

How do I remove expired options from the account holdings? Once the call/put has expired or been exercised it has $0 value and is no longer valid in holdings.

If they are purchased options you need to either sell them or enter a removed shares transaction. If they are sold options (short sales) you have to enter a cover short or add shares transaction.

These are options that expired "out of the money". A counter transaction is posted that brings the holding to 0 share balance but it still shows up as a holding with 0 shares. Since they are expired and 0 balance there should be a way to delete the "holding". But so far I cannot find a method to remove them. Since I regularly trade call and put options I don't want the 0's still reported in the holdings.

Have you checked the settings in the Holdings window to make sure "show closed lots" is not checked?

You can't "delete a holding." If there are any transactions involving it in any investment register, the holding must exist. This can obviously be an annoyance if you trade options frequently, as they will accumulate over time.
You can "Archive Transactions" from the register's Action (gear) menu. This will create a new account and move your zero-share holding transactions into it. If your account is named "Brokerage", this will create "Brokerage-Archive". Try it in a copy of your real data file and see whether you like the result.

Thanks RJ Squirrel, that took care of the issue and left me with a fairly clean register of holdings.
