Quicken modifies a transfer transaction when it is matched against the downloaded transaction

I have an automatic transaction which is scheduled on the 2nd day of every month to transfer money from an investment account to a checking account. For months when the downloaded transaction from the investment company is dated on the 2nd or later I simply accept the transaction and all is well. However when the downloaded transaction is dated before the 2nd what I have done is change the date of the transaction in the Quicken register so that the downloaded transaction matches. Then I accept it. But when I switch over to the checking account the transaction has been changed from a deposit to a payment. Obviously the money can't flow both ways! Simply changing it back to a deposit seems to work without any complaint from Quicken. Nevertheless this should not be happening.

    Hello @Snorkle,

Thank you for letting us know about this issue! To clarify, when you say an automatic transaction, are you referring to a transfer reminder in your Quicken that is set to automatically enter in your registers? Are you referring to a real-world transaction that automatically transfers funds between your accounts on that date? Which financial institution(s) does the cleared transfer download from?

You mentioned that this happens only when the transaction downloads prior to the 2nd day of the month and you have to edit the date before accepting it. Are there any other transfer transactions that you sometimes have to edit prior to accepting them? If so, have you noticed similar behavior with those transactions?

I look forward to your response!

You are correct. I have an automatic reminder that enters the transfer transaction toward the end of each month. The real world transaction is setup at Vanguard and transfers money to a Chase bank checking account. The first transaction that is downloaded comes from Vanguard. Then a few days later I will get the transaction downloaded from Chase. For this month that will probably happen around Feb 4.

This is the only transaction where I have noticed the strange behavior, but it is the only transaction like this that I have setup the automatic entry. Normally when I transfer money I wait until the transactions are downloaded before entering them.

    Thank you for your reply,

I attempted to replicate the issue you're seeing, but didn't have any luck getting it to misbehave the way you describe. My transfers go the opposite direction from yours though (from checking to investment), so that may be why I can't replicate the behavior.

To further investigate when exactly this change is happening, next time you edit the transaction in the register, before you accept, check to see if editing the transaction caused any changes in the other account. This will help narrow down where the process is going wrong by observing whether it's changing after you edit the transaction or after you match the downloaded transaction to it.

Please let me know how it goes!
