Quicken 2009 and Windows 11 24H2

My computer crashed a few weeks ago. I was using Quicken Premier 2009 with Windows 11 build version 23H2. I appeared to work fine. I could open and use Quicken 2009, I could backup files, all appeared normal. After the computer crash I had to reload the operating system but I had to use Windows 11 build version 24H2. I installed Quicken 2009 on the new install. Luckily I had an old backup file on another computer that I used to open with new install of Quicken.
When I try to backup the file on the new operating system (Win11, 24H2), I get an error message and a crash dump report that says I cannot back up to the chosen directory. I close the window and does appear that a backup is taking place. I check the backup directory and indeed it did backup. Also if I double click on the Quicken 2009 to open it, the splash screen shows for a few seconds then closes. Quicken 2009 does not start. I am wondering if Windows One Drive is getting in the way of what is happening????

It certainly can be the case where OneDrive is causing problems with Quicken. You should keep your Quicken data file in a folder that isn't in OneDrive. You should be able to backup your data file to OneDrive, but you shouldn't open a data file that is in a OneDrive folder from Quicken (a restore from OneDrive is OK, because what it does is copy the data file out first and then open it).
Note it is possible that this isn't the problem, and maybe you have finally hit the point where the old version of Quicken just can't be used with the newer versions of Windows, but I would certainly try moving the data file out of OneDrive first.

Just after I made the post, I did move the Quicken.exe and associated files over to my D drive. It is not accessed by One Drive. I essentially removed the original install of Quicken from the C drive, then reinstalled Quicken on the D drive. I also turned off One Drive access to the desktop so that any indirect access via a short cut icon would not happen.. No JOY ! ! !
Interestingly enough as I mentioned before, Quicken 2009 worked flawlessly in Win 11 build 23H2.
I am about install 23H2 on another SSD I have and see what happens.

After you re install 2009 you probably need to update it. If you have an older version, One of the SuperUsers has posted the update patches for older versions (2000 and newer) of Quicken
Have you thought about upgrading to 2013? You can download 2013 Deluxe for free using this how to convert article. It’s under Converting from Quicken 2004-2009. 2013 is the last good version before they started requiring an ID. Then it might run better under the newer Windows versions.
And FYI - If your Quicken was before 2010 you should have several files making up the data. The main data file ends in .QDF. All Quicken versions prior to QW2010 store your data in a series of files all sharing the same filename but with different extensions like - .QDF .IDX, .QEL, .QPH and all 4 of those files were rolled into a single-file .QDF starting in 2010.
I'm staying on Quicken 2013 Premier for Windows.

Thank you all for the replies.
I just finished installing Win11 23H2 in the machine. Same problems and issues exist.
I actually have two different SSD drives so I can switch back and forth between the two to do testing.
The only difference that remains is going from my memory, the older version of 23H2, when Quicken 2009
was working, was I think, and I am not sure, that I did not have the install setup with a Microsoft Account.
I believe if you install without a Microsoft Account then OneDrive does not even get installed.
I could be incorrect, I don't know for sure.
I did try the patch file when I was using 24H2, it did not help.
I might try with Quicken 2013, later. For now I had some major issues with Visual Studio with the 23H2 install.
so for now I put the SSD back that has 24H2 installed. I still have issues with Microsoft Outlook 2003
and the included version of Outlook, which I think is a cloud based version is very buggy.
I guess I will have to just deal with the issues in another way.
For now……….Regards,
Karin
