Changing Budget setting causes Quicken crash

Quicken Windows Subscription Member ✭✭

I am using Quicken for Windows and am at release R61.21.

A few weeks back I was updating my annual budget and noticed a new issue (for me.)

I wanted to change which accounts were included and, while in the budget on the planning tab, selected the Budget Actions button and clicked on "Select accounts." Quicken immediately crashed without any error messages or warnings. After restarting Quicken, I can still see and interact with my budget like normal. I can even make other setting changes, like changing which categories should be included. I just can't make any changes to the accounts included in my budget.

I've had at least two Quicken software updates since. I still can't make any changes to the accounts in my budget.

Anyone else seeing this issue?

    Hello @Jeff W,

That sounds like a frustrating issue, especially since it has persisted across multiple updates.

When you attempt to change the included accounts, does the crash happen immediately upon clicking “Select accounts,” or do you see any brief loading or changes before Quicken closes? Have you noticed any patterns, such as whether the issue occurs with specific types of accounts or budgets? Also, do you recall making any other changes around the time this first started happening?

Understanding these details might help identify what could be contributing to the issue.

Thanks for responding! Just to be clear, I am a Quicken Windows user. (Noticed you have a Quicken Mac tag in your moderator info.)

    To answer your questions:

The crash happens immediately upon clicking on "Select Accounts."

Since I haven't been able to change accounts, I can't answer if it works for some/all/none.

I only have one budget. However, I set up a new budget and let Quicken auto select the budget categories for me (setup option.) Once set up, I clicked on "select accounts" and it worked. No crash. I went back to the original budget and tried the "select accounts" and it crashed, as usual.

No, I don't recall any changes I made before this started happening.

    Regards, Jeff

    @Jeff W ,
you said that you were able to create a new budget and that it works.

After creating a backup of your Quicken data file …
Have you tried to select the broken budget and then, without attempting any other changes, delete the budget? (Budget Actions button / Delete this budget).
That should get it out of the way so that you can't accidentally crash Quicken any longer.

    Hello @Jeff W,

Thanks for providing more information. The Community profile settings only allow you to choose one platform; however, I am experienced and knowledgeable about all Quicken products and platforms.

I suspect that this could potentially be a data file issue. Therefore, I suggest that you please try validating and/or super-validating your data file. However, I do recommend that you first save a backup file prior to performing these steps.

    Validate:

    1. File
    2. Validate and Repair File... image.png
    3. Validate File
    4. Click OK
    5. Close the Data Log
    6. Close Quicken (leave it closed for at least 5 secs)
    7. Reopen Quicken and see if the issue persists.

If the issue persists, proceed to Super Validate. If the issue is resolved after performing validation, then please disregard the instructions to Super Validate.

    Super Validate:

    1. File
    2. Hold CTRL + Shift and click Validate and Repair File...
    3. Super Validate File image.png
    4. Click OK
    5. Close the Data Log
    6. Close Quicken (leave it closed for at least 5 secs)
    7. Reopen Quicken and see if the issue persists.

Let me know how it goes!

I'm having the exact same problem. I've tried the Validation and Super Validation steps suggested with no change.

Thank you for joining this thread, though I am sorry to hear that you are also experiencing this issue. Since the Validate/Super-Validate process did not work for you, have you attempted deleting and recreating the budget as mentioned by @UKR?

    Please let me know!

Hi Jasmine. Thanks for the quick response. Yes, I've deleted the budget and then created a new one. Same problem.
