Frequent corruption of reminders

My Quicken will occasionally (every couple of weeks or so) lock up when I go to my reminders. I have to kill it using Task Manager and then run the Validate File function, which always tells me some corrupted reminder was deleted, although I am not sure which one. This did not used to happen, but started a couple of months ago. I apply all of the updates as they come. I have about 30 reminders a month and have transactions back to 1991 - so the file is fairly large.

Is there a fix for this? why does it keep happening?

    Hello @RichardMi,

We appreciate you reaching out to let us know about this issue!

To better diagnose the problem, I’d like to gather a bit more information:

    • Where is your Quicken data file stored? Is it on your local hard drive (C: Drive) or on a cloud-based/external drive (e.g.: OneDrive, DropBox, USB, etc.)?
    • Were there any significant changes to your system or software before the issue began (such as updates or new installations)?
    • Does Quicken freeze immediately when you click on the Bills & Income tab, or are you able to open it and then it freezes after performing certain actions?

Your answers will help us troubleshoot the issue more effectively.

    Looking forward to your response!

    Hi Anja,

I am running on the local hard drive. My hard drive does backup to OneDrive, but that is not where anything runs. Quicken opens and operates normally until I click on the Bills & Income tab and then it just waits. I have tried waiting as long as 15 minutes. Nothing will respond until I close via Task Manager.

I do not believe there were any significant changes. The only possibility is that I briefly set it up so that I could try using the mobile app. I didn't get much value out of it so I disabled that again. I am not positive if the timing of that and the problem starting match. but it has been disabled for quite some time and the problem has occurred multiple times since then.

    Thank you for following up!

I understand you mentioned that the data file isn’t located in OneDrive. However, since your hard drive is synced to OneDrive, would you mind sharing the exact file path of where your Quicken data file is currently stored, as shown in your Windows File Explorer?

For reference, the default location for Quicken data files is usually:
    C:\Users[Your Username]\Documents\Quicken
    (see illustration below)

Even if the data file is saved to your local hard drive, if the specific location is synced with OneDrive, this can sometimes cause the file—certain parts of the Quicken program—to act unexpectedly or not function properly. Confirming the exact location will help us determine if OneDrive sync might be contributing to the issue.

    Thank you!

well, after looking again it seems that my data file is indeed on OneDrive. Not quite sure how I managed to cause that to happen.

The full file name is at C:\Users\rdmik\OneDrive\Documents\Quicken

    Thanks for checking and confirming!

Since the location is being synced with OneDrive—this can sometimes cause issues with Quicken, as the software may still recognize the file as being cloud-based. (It’s fine to sync backup files with OneDrive, but your primary data file should remain stored locally.)

I recommend turning off OneDrive syncing for the specific folder where your data file is stored. If you prefer not to disable OneDrive syncing entirely, you can adjust the settings to exclude just that folder. While OneDrive setup falls outside my area of expertise, I found a helpful YouTube video here that demonstrates how to do this.

Once you've unlinked the data file location from OneDrive, please try again and let us know if the issue persists.

Let us know how it goes!

Thanks. I have a created a new version of the data file and moved to a folder that is outside of the syncing process. I will monitor it for awhile. Thanks again.

I am afraid the problem is continuing to occur even though I have moved my data file to a local directory. It has happened a couple of times in the last week.
