ContribX vs XIn in a 401(k) account dilemma

I have setup the paycheck wizard in my checking account to record my paycheck where I also contribute to my 401(k) account. The contributions setup are under the "Pre-Tax Deduction" section of the paycheck wizard as follows:

In the 401(k) account, some of the contributions are identified as ContribX while others as XIn as seen below for 2/14 and 2/28:

This inconsistency started since start of 2025; all prior ones are XIn. There is no pattern thru mid March as they go back and forth, and since mid March all are XIn again - so far. I cannot figure out the reason for the inconsistency. For both types, I have tried deleting and reentering them (from within the paycheck wizard) to make them consistent and they stubbornly remain as their original ContribX & XIn. The optional "Tax Schedule" values for the 401(k) account are the default blank.

  • What triggers Quicken to assign one vs the other?
  • What is the end impact of each - should I be concerned?

Currently on R62.16. Thank you.

    Figured it out

I went thru a new install on a VM and there is nothing wrong with my installation or data file and my current and new test data files behave the same way on the new install. But I discovered that regardless of where the funds are coming from (a paycheck wizard or manually as "Cash transferred into account") or whether the account is set to Tax deferred or not, it is the Account Type that determines how a transaction gets its designation:

    • If money is transferred into a 401(k) account, it is designated as XIn
    • If money is transferred into an IRA Account (Traditional or Roth), it is designated as ContribX

I have both, Traditional and Roth 401(k)s. And in Quicken, it is suggested that a Roth 401(k) to be setup as Roth IRA, which was my setup.

So why is my Traditional 401(k) account's register contain both ContribX and XIn leading to creating this post? My own doing: A few times I had incorrectly selected my contributions to Roth 401k (instead of Trad 401k) which were designated as ContribX in the Roth account. Then I corrected them to the Trad 401k. One would think that would change the designation to XIn, but no, it maintained its prior designation of ContribX. Of course it can be cleaned up by changing the dropdown selection to XIn - but be careful as it is a non-reversible change.

New question: Why isn't ContribX option available in a 401(k) account? To separate the tax impact perhaps?

@CaliQkn , Thank you for all your help and suggestions. You wrote that you manually did transfers into a tax deferred account and they all showed up as ContribX. Based on my findings my guess is that the account you tested in was an IRA, not a 401(k).

@BK what usually triggers Quicken to use Xln vs. ContribX is the taxability of the account. If the account is coded as Tax deferred = Yes, then any transfers into the account will be coded as ContribX, otherwise transfers would be coded as Xln. Check that the coding hasn't changed somehow in Account Details to Tax deferred = No.

@BK the only impact I see is if you use the tax planner and Tax reporting.

Thank you - and I should've mentioned that. Tax deferred is set to Yes.

I don't really use the Tax planner, or more accurate to say if I do I don't rely on it at all. But do play around with LTP - with caution.

@BK - I just did some manual test transfers into a tax deferred account and they all show up as ContribX. Not sure what's going on. Maybe it's an issue with the paycheck wizard.

I just did that and they show up as XIn. Answered both, Yes and No, when asked if this was a contribution. Both showed up as XIn.

@BK have you tried the usual troubleshooting steps - validate, or uninstall and reinstall the Quicken program? If not, it might be worth a try.

Validate yes and all is ok. Uninstall no and not a bad idea, will do later tonite on a new fresh VM and a new test file to eliminate all prior install possibilities.

I just created a new blank file, added a tax deferred 401k account and did a transfer into it with YES on contribution. Still shows up as XIn! Ditto with a paycheck.

I don't understand why your transfers show up as ContribX and mine as XIn. I am on QWin Deluxe. Are you deluxe or premier?

@BK did you use the paycheck wizard or did you make the transfer manually? But nevertheless, that tells me it may be an issue with your Quicken installation.

@BK That is interesting. But you are right. I only have IRAs. My 401(k)s are all not closed. I looked back at them and assumed they didn't have the ContribX because they are now all in closed status. Learn something new everyday!

But bottom line you figured it out and the good thing is there is no error.
