Add a preference for hiding Tags in Split window when Tags column is hidden

For those users who use Tags little or not at all, there should be an option to have Tags not visible in the splits window, as it briefly existed in version 8.2.0.

In version 8.2.0, the splits window didn't not show the Tags field if the register was not set to display the Tags column. Some users objected, so in 8.2.1, the developers reversed course and again made the Tags field always present in splits, whether or not a user uses Tags.

I don't really understand why users would use Tags in splits but NOT in non-split transactions, but I accept that there must be use cases for this. And so I understand why the developers reverted to a solution for users who want Tags visible in splits but not in the register.

But I wish the solution implemented worked for ALL users, instead of just those users with the above use case. I'm a user who rarely uses splits, and when I do, it's only in one or two accounts. So I like and prefer NOT to have the Tag field visible in the splits window, where I have always found it annoying to have to Tab past the Tags column, 100% of the time. So I want a solution — a preference/setting — to display Tags in split window only if the Tags column is visible in a register. The code for this already exists, because that's the way it functioned in 8.2.0; all that's needed is to give users the choice.

Actually, I would make it even more flexible: make the option to select where the Tag field appears, where you can pick, one or the other or both. That would satisfy everyone.

    • main/parent transaction
    • child transaction

Maybe I'm not thinking creatively enough, but would it be useful to have the Tag column present in a register for regular transactions, but not have the ability to assign tags if the transaction is split?

In any case, all I'm asking for is the ability to hide the tags field in a split transaction for those who don't typically or ever use tags.

I never would have thought that anyone would want the Tag column only present in splits; I'm not going to say at this point that no-one would want the reverse though I don't recall anyone ever asking for it before.

Personally I don't care one way or the other. I don't remember being particularly bothered by the way it is now (and was prior to 8.2) when I wasn't using tags & had them turned off everywhere I could.

It has been asked when the ability was lost in v8.2.0. Therefore, the logical choice is to allow for all scenarios. Since the code is already there, this should be an easy implementation. Why waste time trying to second guess why and how, when it has already been pointed out that there is a desire?

By "the reverse" I meant having the Tag column in the main register but not available in the split window (the reverse of what we had in 8.2). We didn't lose that in 8.2 - Quicken Mac never worked like that (at least not modern version).

@smayer97 You misunderstood, or I wasn’t clear enough...

    1. What had always existed, and is now reinstated, was the Tags field being present in the splits window whether or not the Tags columns is visible in a particular register. This changed in 8.2.0, people complained, and it is back again In 8.2.1.
    2. What I am requesting in this Idea thread is a setting so users can hide/remove the Tags field from the splits window when the Tags column is not visible in a register. This is the way it worked briefly in 8.2.0 — but I’m seeking a setting so users can choose which of these two behaviors they want.
    3. You then suggested a setting allowing a possible third configuration: the Tag column visible in the register, but absent in the splits window. I said I couldn’t think of how this could be useful or why anyone would want it. Notably, I don’t recall anyone ever asking for this configuration.

Again, what users asked for when 8.2.0 was released was #1 above: the Tag column hidden in the register but the Tag field visible in the splits window. I’m asking for a user-selectable choice between #1 and #2. No one has expressed a desire for #3.

Ok, I guess I miswrote that someone asked for the third option…I did not analyse it that closely BUT I do see a value in the third option… where someone only ever uses tags at the transaction/parent level but never uses tags on split lines, so they may not want the clutter.

So, again, why waste time trying to second guess why and how? It most likely is just as easy to implement with the third option, with no real negative. And I can see a use for it.
