EWC+ Disconnect

I thought I had Posted this days ago, I don't see it….

On 6/18/25…when I ran OSU ..ALL my EWC+ Accts got disconnected? I had the RED Circle with the Line thru it on all my EWC+ accounts from the 3 Banks that connect with EWC+….it had to be an EWC+ given all my EWC+ accounts got disconnected, my 2 DirectConnect acct connected fine.

I had to De-Activate and Re-Activate all EWC+ accts from all 3 Banks to get all my accts Activated. To add insult to Injury….some of my Registers after the re-activation….displayed incorrect Balances. I have experienced this in past Re-Activations; the EWC+ re-activations will alter the OPENING balance of the Registers….what I think takes place is, Transactions that were processed the day of the EWC+ disconnect…when you Re-Activate….the Register Balances are off by the amount of those Transactions… What a Pain….having to enter Dummy entries to place the regiaters back in balance with the Banks.

Bring back DirectConnect….and if the connection is not secure and the reason for the chnage from DD to EWC+…QUICKEN….develop a Connection like DD that is Secure…Make this Product productive and reliable….…as it had been under DirectConnect.

    Hello @denmarfl,

Thank you for sharing your experience. Are you still seeing these errors with your Express Web Connect + (EWC+) accounts, or did the deactivate/reactivate correct the issue?

While it is uncommon, the issue with the opening balance changing when you reconnect an account is a known issue. Please see this article for more information: https://www.quicken.com/support/why-did-my-opening-balance-change-after-changing-ewc-quicken-windows/

Unfortunately, it is the financial institution that decides which connection methods they will support.

I look forward to your response!

Thank you for following up with me. I kind of hold my breath every time I make an EWC+ connection. As a 25-year user of Quicken, in my opinion, bank selection or not, EWC+ connection is nowhere near as fast, reliable and useful as was Direct Connect. Sure you need to close this posting by all means go right ahead.

    Thank you for your reply,

You are not the only one frustrated by financial institutions choosing to switch to EWC+ from Direct Connect. Have you spoken to your financial institution about this? While Quicken cannot control what connection options a financial institution chooses to support, if enough customers ask for Direct Connect, that may influence them to bring it back.

    Thank you!

I did speak with an agent in the Office of the President of Bank of America….I got nothing but lip service. They say it was about security….but being a Quicken user from 2001 and using DirectConnect….I was never aware of any security breach with DD. My guess….like always…it was about the Money. Quicken users were doing the jobs of tellers..savings Banks Money…but a bigger saving is realized when not only do we do the jobs of tellers, we now must do the work at the Banks website…a further saving for the Banks. I have given thought to changing to another Bank that continues to offer DD…when I looked into Wells Fargo…I was told they have plans to convert to EWC+. Truist is still offering DD….nothing has been reported about them converting..yet?

    Thank you for your reply,

To address your question about financial institutions that support Direct Connect, this article provides a list of the financial institutions that support Direct Connect and bill pay through that connection:

Please be aware that some financial institutions do charge a fee for Direct Connect. Additionally, just because they are currently on the list does not mean they will offer Direct Connect perpetually. It would be wise to check with the financial institution to confirm if there is a fee and if there are any plans to discontinue support for Direct Connect.

Financial institutions typically view EWC+ as more secure because you input your login credentials directly on their website, and then they issue an authentication token which allows the 3rd party application to access account information. For more information on the different connection methods, see this article:

    I hope this helps!

I think all banks eventually will support EWC+, at most. It does have a level of security in that communications between the bank and Quicken (or Intuit) are read-only and the security token provided by the bank is unique to the vendor it's issued to.

But with EWC+ and losing direct connect means that we do duplicate work, we enter transactions in the quicken register, and we go to the bank site to actually enter those transactions. So now we're doing twice the work which takes a little bit away from the convenience quicken/directconnect gave us. You would think that with the knowledge of the banks and quicken, direct connect or something similar could have been created by quicken/thebanks to allow us to continue to upload transfers and payments
