Quicken Classic - Difficulty reconciling and older backups throw "file in use" error [Edited]

I am having issues with Quicken Classic for Windows. I recently migrated from Win10 to Win11 on a different machine.

When I reconcile, the balance is always 0. I tried to balance, and it says I'm off 200$.

I tried to open a backup file, but every time I do, it shows the most recent entries. I've tried going back further, it tells me the file is already in use.  I'm on the verge of reinstalling Quicken on the old Win10 machine that I did a clean install on, but I shouldn't have to.

Hello @Qwix,

Thank you for letting us know you're encountering these issues.  Based on what you describe, with Payees incorrectly showing N/A, the issue is most likely a file-specific issue.

Where are your Quicken backup files stored?  If you have them stored on a shared/network drive or a cloud storage service, try moving the backup file you want to restore to your local hard drive.  Once it is on your local hard drive, then try restoring the backup file.

If the file you're trying to restore is already on your local hard drive, then there are a couple possibilities.  If you have an antivirus program on your computer, try pausing it while restoring the backup.  It's possible the antivirus is trying to scan it, which would interrupt the process and cause the error.  It is also possible that there's an issue with the backup file itself.  If that is the case, then you should be able to bypass the problem by opening a different backup file.

I understand the answer, but I'm looking at entries where the payee is "N/A".  This is not correct.  Why cant I view/restore a backup that does not include entries beyond the date of the backup.  Its not the bank that is telling me I'm 200$ off, it is Quicken.  My prior months account balances do not match the current months account opening.

If you were balanced in the recent past, I wouldn't sweat the small stuff.  Rather than spending a lot of energy and time trying to find the $200, I'd assume that the financial institution is correct, accept a Balance Adjustment, and move on.
