Unreviewed status disappearing (turning "reviewed") on its own (Q Mac)

I was just downloading all transactions, and I have it set up to show the Connection Status (Update Summary) always.

Sometime near the end of the update, I saw 3 accounts in the sidebar got a blue dot, but when the update finished, only one blue dot remained in the sidebar. The screen had blinked, sort of, and two of the blue dots disappeared.

The Update Summary does show that 3 accounts were updated (with a total of 5 transactions between them), so from that I know which accounts were updated, but only one of them - the one that still has the blue dot in the register - shows any icon next to the new transactions. It's just a regular blue dot - a new downloaded credit card transaction.

I can guess by looking at the registers of the 2 other accounts that the Update Summary showed were modified, that the transactions in question were matches to the two halves of a manually input transfer from checking to a credit card.

I can confirm that guess in Quicken for Windows, which I am running in parallel as I test out the Mac version. For the 2 accounts in question, the Windows version is showing me the Downloaded Transactions review window, with the 2 potential transaction matches, one in each account, which currently are marked with the orange pencil in the 2 registers.

For the Mac, I've read that after auto-matching, these transactions should have been updated in the registers with blue pencils (meaning matched to manually entered transactions, but not yet reviewed).

Is there some setting on the Mac that in certain cases auto-reviews some types of transactions? I hope so, so I can turn it off! I want to review everything.

Yes.

If you have your accounts set to auto-reconcile, there is a Settings (Register)to mark reconciled transactions as reviewed.

There is also a "try new features" under Settings (General) that will allow updated transactions to be auto-reviewed.

I don't know if you have those settings enabled, but this could cause the auto-reviewed behavior you are seeing.

I think that, in time, you might find that "Connection Status" window less relevant and disable it. You can see the status by looking at the sidebar.

I don't have any accounts set to auto-reconcile, and don't automatically mark reconciled as reviewed. And also haven't selected "try new features."

I've updated since then with no error. So hopefully this error won't recur.

One thing which could be relevant is I don't remember whether I clicked to download all, or used the option to Update Selected Account - a feature that only sometimes has worked. Most of the time it updates all accounts. I have read that if the selected account uses Quicken Connect, it will update all QC accounts… but haven't read what happens if you update a DC account. It just doesn't work, and maybe is broken in other ways.

I was just notified of a new release, and it says you can now update the selected account — so maybe they fixed this?

The Connection Status window is truly not that helpful since it doesn't give details during the update the way the one on QWin does, but proved helpful in this case - it listed all the accounts that had updates, including the one(s) where the blue dot in the sidebar disappeared. That made it easier to find the auto-reviewed transactions.

I wonder when it's safe to install the update.

If you select Update Selected Account with a DC account it will update all DC accounts with that bank (but not any other banks). You are right about Quicken Connect, Update Selected Account on a QC account will update all QC accounts at all banks.

Thanks for the update. Jon explained the FI behavior (which is the same as with Windows)

You'll have to watch and see the reviewed status as it is hard to speculate without being there to see.

Keep in mind that downloading of transactions/matching occurs around the same time, so you might see balances bounce around/indicator statuses changes occur as the latter process processes.

If you have a FI failure to connect occur, you will see orange dots in the sidebar for that FI. That is why I don't even bother with that Connection Status Window anymore.

I wouldn't fret too much about about release updates as there typically isn't breakage that occurs. In the rare events it does, it is resolved quickly. Since you are coming from the Windows side, I can understand your apprehension about that. The majority of complaints I see and update problems are coincidental problems (i.e., a bank having issues, etc.)

Off-topic but following up on the Update - I installed it with no problem.

I do wonder what it means that a new Balance column was added to the registers - it was already there, and can be enabled or disabled like other columns. (I know the new Balance tab is something different.)

I don't think updating just 1 account - which was already visible (and theoretically operational) in the context menu as well as Accounts menu - is working differently, but maybe it does in some circumstances.

In previous versions, if you selected an account group, such as Banking or Credit Card, there was no Balance column (nor any way to add one). In 8.3, there is now a Balance column showing the cumulative running balance of all the accounts. It's a little odd, since it's not a real-world balance of any account, but it could be useful if you wanted to see the balance of all your credit card accounts.

Nope, no change in functionality. All that changed is that you can now invoke the command by Control-clicking on the account in the sidebar and selecting the command from the pop-up menu. Since the command already existed in the Accounts menu, I think this addition is a trivial change.

And as has always been the case, updating "one account" is a misnomer unless you have a single account at a financial institution. As has been the case all along, updating a single account will actually update all accounts at a financial institution if the connection to that financial institution is Direct Connect, and will update all Quicken Connect accounts at all institutions if the selected account is Quicken Connect.

Ah, I see that Balance column in the group - but there is a grand total for each group in the sidebar (is that also new?) The grand total is useful for credit cards, and I have the sidebar only displaying up to today, so the reminders of upcoming payments in the group's Balance column adds some value I suppose.

I thought you could already right-click to attempt to update a single account. Perhaps not. Either way not a big deal and the right-click way is easier than reaching the menubar.

I agree the selection is misnamed - in QWin, the comparable feature involves selecting an institution to update, not an account (and certainly not a connection method).

The problem recurred. An account was marked in sidebar that a new transaction was downloaded. I looked in its register and there was nothing to review - nothing with a blue dot or blue pencil.

Since I'm still running QWin in parallel, I downloaded there too, and it showed me in its Downloaded Transactions review window the item that was matching in my register. It was a bank recurring payment, matching the monthly reminder in my register that had been marked with the orange pencil. There would have been no way for me to have figured out what had happened without QWin.

Also potentially relevant: my auto-reconcile choice for all accounts to "Ask me to review a reconciliation before saving it."

Globally, I have NOT elected "Mark reconciled transactions as reviewed" at all, let alone the sub-option to "Include accounts that automatically reconcile newly downloaded transactions."

I think maybe QMac is losing track of its icons. In the sidebar it has both an account that has a new transaction, AND an account that was auto-reconciled (successfully or not) and the reconciliation itself needs to be reviewed. In the register, it has to mark the transaction with a blue dot or pencil, and flip the reconcile indictor at the bottom to green. Somewhere along the way, the Status column is getting incorrectly cleared.
