Strange Behavior

Some time back we opened three 529 accounts for our great grandkids. Everything was fine until about three months ago when two of them started to act strangely. We put $200 per month into all three and have never taken a withdrawal. But now the portfolios show a plus-up on the day the deposits are made followed by an unknown decrease toward the end of the month. See attachment.

I have thoroughly researched this problem and can't find anything in their Quicken registers that would appear to cause this. The Quicken accounts are not connected to the 529 site so that's not what's happening.

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Those gradual sloping downwards portions of the graph suggest to me that there's no pricing information during that time, so it's connecting the dots between a higher price immediately following one month's activity and the lower price at the beginning of the next months activity. I would take a look at the price history for those securities in the Securities window and see what's going on - I suspect you'll find one or more has a similar up & down pattern.

Thanks Jon. I don't disagree with your comment, but prior to March, 2025 the curve on the graph acted like you would expect it to. that is, every month the curve increased a little as another deposit was made and the curve then rose to meet the next month's deposit. I probably should have sent this part of the graph as well. This is a three-year lookback for the same account.

You included a snippet of your transaction register for the transactions dated on/after February 2025.

As far as I can see this …
The transactions beginning in April are for a deposit on the 23rd and a Buy on the next day, the 24th. That means, there's a one day cash balance in the account … and that causes the saw tooth graph.

If the deposit occurs on the same day as the Buy (as in 3/23/25), there will be no cash balance for a day and the graph will not show a saw tooth.

@UKR If that were the case I would expect the account value to go up, not down. And when you look at the magnitude of the sawtooth it’s way out of proportion to the deposits - they’re depositing hundreds of dollars but the account value is changing by thousands. I continue to suspect that there’s an issue with pricing data.

In that case, and without having an inside look into the customer's data file, especially the price history, I'd say it's time for @strolyt to contact Quicken Support on the phone during posted hours of operation and request help. Let them do a screen share session with you to review the situation on your computer, to determine the nature of the problem and to figure out how to fix it.

Agreed, I suspect it is with pricing. The value of that entire fund is what is likely dropping to zero (for that holding), not just the $200 deposits. Since I don't know the total position I can't say for certain.

I believe that graph only plots points at actual transactions, so I suspect the deposit transaction is the next redraw point (with a current value of zero for that fund), and then the Buy (which creates a price) is plotted next. But, I could be wrong.

A trip to Window:Securities (and price history for this fund) should be pretty telling what is going on-I suspect you will only see monthly prices based on the dates of the buys.

I would be curious to see if you entered a price for the day before the deposit and how it would affect the graph. (You can use the same price as of the next buy)

And even if this is the case, I can't state why it didn't happen in the past (changes to Quicken, different funds, price histories were included in the past.)
