Incomplete Download of Securities Prices - Requires multiple "One Step" Downloads

As you know, Quicken will update the market value of securities at the end of each day using the "one-step update" process (I wait until 7:00pm to do the download to make sure all the individual security prices have been updated by the respective mutual fund houses). Over the past month or so, I have consistently experienced where the "one step" download does not download the ending market value of all the securities on the first download. Accordingly, I typically have to do the "one-step" download 3 or 4 times to get all of the securities to be updated. It is typically Fidelity mutual funds / ETF that take multiple downloads to populate. Not a huge deal, but just annoying. Is anyone else experiencing this issue?

I was using Quicken version 64.22 and just downloaded 64.23. I am on the Windows platform and I have roughly 55 securities (ETF, mutual funds, and stocks).

I can't speak for Fidelity, but how about downloading Quotes early in the morning, before market opens? That should get you yesterday's closing prices for every security, no matter how late they manage to post their closing prices.

It is just that the "one-step" download does not populate all the securities with the market price on the first attempt. It is almost like it doesn't have the capacity to gather all the market values and requires multiple "one-step" updates to get the prices. But, after running the "one step" update 3 or 4 times, all the market values for the securities eventually get populated.

How many securities are you downloading prices for?

@pgavon To be clear, when you run a One step Update, only some of your 55 or so security prices are updated, but running it again immediately updates more prices?

If you go to Tools > One Step Update Summary after the first attempt, does it indicate that all the quotes were updated? Is the count of quotes different when you run the OSU again?

Are all of your securities publicly traded, with valid ticker symbols, or are some of them special 401(k) funds, which often mimic publicly traded funds but have a slightly different name? Those prices are only downloaded from your broker, not from Quicken's quote provider.

https://community.quicken.com/profile/Jim_Harman - Hey Jim - You are correct that only some (probably the majority of securities, say 65%) are updated the first time I launch the "One Step Update". I then look to see which securities were not updated with the market value for that day. If I see securities which did not get a market value update (which happens pretty much every day), I again will launch the "One Step Update" (usually within 30 seconds of the initial launch). I continue this process of running the "One-step Update" until I see that the market price for all securities has been updated. It typically 3 to 4 times of running the "One-step update" to get all 55 securities updated. All of the securities (stocks, mutual funds and EFT's) are publicly traded with valid ticker symbols so I assume the market values are being updated by Quicken's Quote provider.

When I update the market prices tonight, I will specifically look at the "one step Update" Summary to see if all quotes were updated and monitor it until all of the securities get updated market values.

Are you downloading transactions for these securities? If so, you may be receiving a mixture of quotes from your broker(s) and the quote provider.

If you go to the Security List, is the Download Quotes box checked for all the securities you currently hold? That controls whether Quicken tries to get prices from the quote provider for each security.

Do you have a large number of securities with Download Quotes checked and also Watch List? Quicken will try to get quotes for the selected Watch List securities even if you do not currently hold them.

One experiment you could try would be before doing your first OSU for the day, go to an Investing > Portfolio view and click on Update. That will get prices just from the quote provider. Does that get all the quotes? Does clicking that more than once get more quotes?

https://community.quicken.com/profile/Jim_Harman - I am downloading transactions (I check daily first thing in the morning) for all securities which are currently at Schwab, Fidelity, and Merrill. I reviewed the Security List and each of my current securities has the "download quote" box checked. There are no securities that have the "watch list" box checked for them. The remaining securities which do not have the "download quote" box checked have the "hide" box checked.

I am going to try the "update quotes" on the Portfolio View tonight to see what happens. I will see how many securities download on that update request.

A key question @Jim_Harman asked was about whether Quicken was reporting all quotes downloaded or only some quotes downloaded. Your one step update summary should be including a line like this:

for a full complete download, or with something like "80 of 146 quotes" if fewer are being grabbed. If fewer are grabbed, there is an associated "Report" option. What are you seeing on that summary.

In the same vein, you stated "I then look to see which securities were not updated with the market value for that day. " How are you making that determination? The xx of yy quotes and Report would be one way. Looking at portfolio views might be another.

So this is what I will use in the future. I will try the "one step update" next week to see how many securities are updated.

Recently when I used the "One Step Update", I was able to tell that securities were not updated with the latest market value at the end of day because they literally showed no change to the prior day market value, and I looked at each security (through the Portfolio View page) noting the values should have changed based on the market activity for the day. It is unusual for stock securities to not change from one day to the next whereas bond securities may not change from one day to the next (depending on the price of bonds / yields). Finally, after hitting the "one step update" 3 or 4 times I was able to ensure that all of the securities were populated with the end of day market price.

If you were using the "Price Day Change" column in a Portfolio view to see if the price has changed, that might explain what you are seeing. Sometimes that field does not get recalculated when it should, even if a new price has been downloaded. If this is happening, you can force a recalculation by changing the As of date at the top right of the Portfolio view back by one day then returning to the problem date.

https://community.quicken.com/profile/Jim_Harman - That could explain why the "Price Day Change" amount was not showing an amount after the first "One-Step Update", but it would eventually change after doing the "One-Step Update" 3 or 4 times. Because there was no value in the "Price Day Change" column at the first "One-Step Update", the "Day Gain Loss" column would not update as well. I think my fix at this point is to simply use the "Update Quotes" tab on the "Update" button on the Investment portfolio view at the end of each day instead of using the "One Step Update". I'm going to test this out on Monday and see what happens. If that doesn't work I'll use your suggestion of changing the "as of" date. Thanks for all the help!!!
