Security price history corruption

Quicken sometimes updates security price history with wildly incorrect prices and trading volumes. This seems to happen when I open my Quicken data file, and the program attempts to download current prices for securities. Of the over 1300 securities in my portfolio, this happens to perhaps 10-20 securities when it does occur. I typically see incorrect prices in groups of 5 days. This has been happening from time to time over several years and releases. Today I exported the corrupt price histories to CSV files for 11 securities (including Wells Fargo, Microsoft, Comcast) and can share these with Quicken support if interested.

Windows 10, Quicken R64.30.

Are you running Premier? If so, do you have the option at Edit > Preferences >Investments > Real time quotes checked?

Or if you are running Deluxe, did you have Premier at one time and might have enabled Real time quotes?

If you go to Edit > Preferences > Startup, is the Download transactions when Quicken starts option selected, or on the Investments Preferences page, is "Automatically quotes every 15 minutes" selected?

    I'm running Premier.

At Edit > Preferences > Startup, the 'Download transactions when Quicken starts' checkbox is UNCHECKED.

At Edit > Preferences > Investments, the 'Automatically update quotes every 15 minutes' checkbox is UNCHECKED. The 'Real-time quotes' checkbox is UNCHECKED.

Here's an example of the price history corruption encountered today. These prices are for Microsoft. Note: the most recent price is correct (as of around 9 am) but the following 4 prices are corrupted. Originally today's price was corrupted too, but I subsequently ran 'Update historical prices' which corrected today's price.

The source of the downloaded data is clearly Quicken’s third party data supplier since hi/lo/volume data is included.

Are you really downloading prices for 1300 securities and do you need all those? That is, the one-step update summary shows something like “1300 of 1300 quotes and investing headlines updated”. In my experience, Quicken’s practice for Download Quotes and One-Step Update is to download prices only for securities currently owned or on the Watch list. While I have over 1,000 securities in the list, a much smaller group actually get updated. I am thinking that with 1300 tickers being sent and returned, something is getting crossed up. Download Historical quotes is a little different in that it prompts for the securities and defaults to all of them (with Download checked?).

It seems odd to me that you are seeing this 5-day pattern. It is also odd that downloading 'historical' quotes updated today's price.

When this occurs, are all 1300 messed up, or only some securities? If only some, is it a consistent group messed up?

I'd also encourage you to see if both a Download Quotes and a Download Historical Quotes generate this problem.

A long time ago, Download Quotes brought in the last 5-days of values and Download Historical Quotes brought in last 30 days. Those values at that time came from two different data suppliers (I believe). It seems more recently the two have somewhat blended together. That is, it seems a Download Quotes request will try to fill in more than the latest 5 days if the program sees more than 5 days is missing. I don't know if any of that becomes relevant to your issue, though.

Thank you, q_lurker, for your help with this issue.

Yes, there are profiles for over 1300 securities in my Quicken file. I believe only about 200 are currently held in brokerage accounts.

To answer the question of how many are held, I just reopened the Quicken file. A dialog box appears stating "Recalculating Investment Values" or something similar - it disappears quickly. I now notice that the same problem has recurred. Here's the up-to-the-minute price history for Chubb:

After running One Step Update, the dialog box shows '353 of 396 quotes and investing headlines updated.' Then, I see that the current day prices look correct, but there are still at least 4 errant prices in the price history for many securities, and daily investment gains and losses are incorrect.

Yes, I agree the 5-day behavior seems odd.

No, it doesn't happen with all securities, only some, perhaps about 20 or 25 (that I can locate) when the problem arises. There seems to be no pattern of which securities will be affected - but I will start keeping and list and checking for that.

I am not aware of differences between Download Quotes and Download Historical Prices, or which if either of these functions is activated upon file open.

As I said earlier, the problem seems to occur only when the Quicken data file is first opened and the 'Recalculating Investment Values' dialog briefly appears.
