Rebuilding A Quicken File Without Data Corruption

Hi,

So I've finally concluded that my Quicken file is indeed corrupt. I started a new Quicken file, and began importing QIF files from my previous file. But I noticed that leads to the new file becoming corrupted as well. I really don't want to have to enter 900+ transactions I have in my old file by hand. Is there some way to verify the integrity of the QIF files prior to importing them? What do I need to look for? Any help would be most appreciated.

    I certainly can't answer your question but I'd think that more information about the corruption - how are you seeing it?, how does the corruption express itself? - might be useful to somebody who maybe can answer your question.

    Hello @recursor1,

    Thank you for sharing your experience.

    To answer your question, no, there is no way of verifying the integrity of the QIF files. Sometimes exporting damaged data can result in importing that same damaged data into your new file. I agree with @Tom Young, knowing what issues you are seeing may be helpful.

    I would also suggest making a copy of your file rather than importing QIF files. Are you opposed to this method? Check out this Support Article on advanced data file troubleshooting for steps and suggestions.

    Another thing to consider is what could have caused the damage to your file. Was it a conversion from an earlier version? Is your active file stored on a cloud service? Is your file being synced/backed up by any third-party services like OneDrive, Carbonite, or Dropbox?

    Thank you!

    So there were a lot of problems with my Quicken file. And I am gonna be importing some of my QIF files into the new file because frankly I can't spend the time entering in every single transaction again. However, I am entering in all my investment transactions manually. And that is where the biggest trouble was. It's hard to distinguish between a data corrupted file and just Quicken being it's usual buggy self. The good news is that QIF files are essentially just plain text files. If there is corruption in there, it can be viewed.

    @Tom Young , @Quicken Alyssa

    What prompted me to finally create a new file was incorrect lot purchase prices in Portfolio view. But I also noticed other issues. For example. occasionally Quicken would "refresh", and jump to the beginning of the account register.

    As I have constantly hinted at in other remarks, I believe a lot of the corruption stems from online sync. In my new data file, I haven't connected any accounts, and Quicken remains mostly error free as a result.

    I did finally figure out one thing. The paycheck corruption issues I've been experiencing doesn't have anything to do with the sync. In my new file, I also had my paychecks get corrupted. I saw a remark online that said sometimes copying the quicken file can resolve the issue. And that worked. The corrupt entries in the tax center disappeared after I copied the file and pasted elsewhere.

    In addition to that, I've also figured out that doing a validate and repair actually causes the numbers in the tax center to become incorrect. It shows one scheduled transaction corrected, which is my upcoming paycheck, but the correction actually makes the entries incorrect. So something is wrong with the validate file process in Quicken. I'm going to create a separate thread about this in a day or so with more details about how I'm using my paychecks. Look out for it.
