Fidelity updates create new securities

Every time I update my Fidelity 401(k) after a paycheck contribution, some securities are created as new securities, while various sell/buy transactions are created to offset the differences. This is using Quicken Classic Premier for Mac (Version 8.3.2 (Build 803.58902.100), macOS 15.7.1). Why won't the Fidelity sync reuse the existing securities?

    Hi, @andy

See if this post applies. I suspect it does:

Thanks @John_in_NC that's helpful. How do I figure out what uniquely identifies the fund?

For example, when I open the Securities dialog, I see the following two entries from the 401(k):

    • Security: VANG MIDCAP IDX INST
    • Symbol: VMCIX

    And there is:

    • Security: VANG MIDCAP IDX INST 2
    • Symbol:

I doubt the Security name is coming across with a "2," I assume Quicken is adding that. Does that mean the security is coming from Fidelity is without a Symbol? Isn't that a bug?

(Note the buy/sell transactions I mentioned were apparently due to something else, so it's just this duplicate security name issue…)

    Thanks!

Many of us went through this exercise multiple times in the early days of the Fidelity transition. Luckily, many of these issues have been resolved. Mine is working correctly now. But, it does persist for those who haven't yet done the merging.

It shouldn't be too hard to figure out which securities match up by name alone.. But, you will see Remove and Add shares at the beginning of the register, and the share balances should align with what is being taken away/added.

It appears VMCIX in your post are the same funds. After making a backup, I would add the ticker to the new fund, and you will likely have to change it to being a Mutual Fund.

After that, you should be able to select and merge the two. The two (Add & Remove Shares) placeholders should disappear.
