Multiple accounts corrupted when opening Quicken

In the past week I have multiple accounts display the wrong balances and transactions. My credit card account shows no transactions at all. I can go back to a backup from the day before and everything is fine. I can leave Quicken open for days and everything stay fine. I was even able to close Quicken today, open it back up, allow it to update to R65.17 (Windows Classic build 27.1.65.17) and everything stay fine. But this most recent time I closed it and re-opened it later, the old corruption returned.

My QDATA.QDF file is about 200MB.

I've restored again from the last good backup. Quicken is showing me that is has the backup file open. File Explorer shows me the backup file that's been opened and my original QDATA.QDF have the same "Date Modified" time stamp. I'm afraid to close Quicken again.

I see lots of concerns on this forum, which is troubling. I don't know how long this restore-from-backup is going to work. I really need Quicken to work. I've relied on it for years.

Is there a way to get out of this restore loop I'm in?

Have you validated and super validated the data file(s)?

I tried "validating" and it only made things worse. I'm not sure the value in going back and flagging really old transactions that involved moving money b/t accounts that no longer exist. It certainly wouldn't help a credit card account that no longer shows any transactions and a balance nowhere near the actual balance.

    Hello @HelpQuickHelpMe,

Thank you for sharing your experience with us.

I have some follow-up questions for you.

    • Where is your data file located?
    • Is your file being synced/backed up by any third-party services like OneDrive, Carbonite, or Dropbox?

    Looking forward to your response.

My computer has a Samsung SSD drive. DB file is saved to my user profile directory on the local C:\ drive.

I do use Carbonite. The directory where the database file is saved is selected for backup by Carbonite.

I can no longer import qfx files. I uninstalled and re-installed Quicken and now all transactions are gone from ALL of my banking accounts (again). I guess I'll see if I can restore back to another backup.

Tried to validate/repair file. Only made it worse. I lost every transaction since 7/1/2024 for every account.

I believe this started after the most recent Quicken update (which was likely re-applied after I re-installed tonight).

I will begin searching for an alternative to Quicken. This is not something I can continue to tolerate.

    @HelpQuickHelpMe,

Thank you for following up, though I am sorry you are experiencing so many issues.

I think that we may have a combination of things happening here. There is definitely a Known Issue with importing QFX files in R65.15 & R65.17. The uninstall, reinstall is what should fix this, as you stated you already tried.

I think the bigger issue here is that your data file may be damaged. I would suggest finding a viable backup and moving it to the default location, which is C:>Users>username>Documents>Quicken. Once it is there, make sure it is not included in any sync or backup of Carbonite, or anything else. It is fine to have your backups saved on cloud services or backed up by Carbonite, but it is just not recommended for your active data file, and it can cause damage.

Once you are in a file you can use, please follow the steps outlined in this Support Article for advanced data file troubleshooting. You can start on step three. Please note, once you are in the copy file, all connected accounts will need to be reconnected. If at any point you are unhappy with the results of the whole process, you can get back to the previous file by going to File and selecting the second file listed at the bottom of the menu choices.

Let us know how it goes.
