Error after enter payment - Quicken 2014 Home & Business
After entering a payment into Quicken, when I hit Save, this error message appears: Quicken has encountered a problem and needs to close.
It offers the option to send an error report to Quicken, but when I say yes, it says it could not send and shuts down. When I reopen Quicken with the same data file, it gives an error message and shuts down again.
I restore from an old version of the data file, but the same thing happens when I enter a payment.
I can open other data files without error.
Is there some sort of file size limit? The data file is 21MB in size and has 25 years of data.

You're running an old, unsupported Quicken version.
Sending an error report doesn't work for you because the old servers supporting this old version have long since been retired.Have you tried validating and supervalidating your Quicken data file, to attempt to repair it?
Validate and Supervalidate instructions
Validate:
• Click File/File Operations
• Select Validate and Repair File...
• Select Validate File
• If the data file contains investment accounts also select "Rebuild investing lots".
• If you suspect that a damaged Quotes Price History causes your problems, also select "Correct investing price history" functions "Delete" or "Repair and Rebuild".
• Click OK
• Review the Data Log. Anything interesting in there, worthwhile posting here?
• Close Quicken, leave it closed for about 30 secs
Super Validate:
• Click File/File Operations
• Press and hold both CTRL and Shift keys while you click Validate and Repair File...
• Select Supervalidate File
• Click OK
• Review the Data Log. Anything interesting in there, worthwhile posting here?
• Close Quicken, leave it closed for about 30 secs
• Reopen Quicken and see if the issue persists.0 -
Thanks UKR. I did validate but didn't know about supervalidating. I have now done both and they both said QDF: No errors.
I restored an old version of the QDF file which has no problems. When I add a new payment transaction, that's when the error happens. I have 30 years of data. Is it possible the new transaction exceeds Quicken's memory limit, and deleting some old entries would solve the problem?

In short, No. You have some other data file corruption aspect. Perhaps you have a corrupted program installation, I suppose, but that seems less likely.
Can you enter the Payment in a different account without getting the error message?
Can you enter a withdrawal from this account without error? In other words, is this account the problem?
If you restore a backup file from 'long ago' (maybe 6 months or a year), does it show this problem?
If you create a new file with one account of a similar setup, will it accept a payment?
Any other cross-checking you might be able to do might help focus the problem. Date of transaction, payee, etc.

When I restore a 3-day-old backup, and open Quicken, it doesn't show any error messages.
When I restore the 3-day-old backup, open Quicken, and enter a payment to my main bank account, the error appears.
When I restore the 3-day-old backup, open Quicken, and enter a payment with a different payee and different amount to my main bank account, the error appears.
When I restore the 3-day-old backup, open Quicken, and enter a payment to a different bank account, the error does not appear.
Thus, the problem seems related to my main bank account but not the other accounts.

How many transactions are in that problem bank account register?
This number should show at the bottom of the account register view in the line where all the account totals are displayed: "xxxxx Transactions"
Alternatively, this number should be available using an optional column in Tools / Account List. If the column "# of transactions" does not already show, click on the Options button at the bottom of the Account List view, then click on "show number of transactions".0 -
The problem bank account has 7708 transactions before I add the transaction that causes the error.

Thanks for responding.
I was asking, because there's an undocumented limit of 32767 transactions per account register. Exceed this number and you'll get a similar Quicken crash. So, back to the drawing board. There's some other issue with this account register … :-(
Working around this issue I suggest you do the following:
- Make a note of the most recent 2 or 3 transactions in the account register (Shift-PrtScrn it and print it.)
- Delete these 2 or 3 transactions
- Add a new offline account register of the same Type, name it same as the problem register plus a suffix "New"
- Transfer the register balance from old to New
- Reenter the 2 or 3 deleted transactions into the New register
- Stop using the old register.
- Change all scheduled reminders using the old register to use the new register instead.
- Rename the old register and give it a suffix "Old"
- Optionally mark the old register closed in Quicken
- Rename the New register and remove the "New" suffix

I would try creating a Quicken copy of your file and validate the copy. Quicken copy cleans out unused space in the file and can help eliminate data issues.
File | File Operations | CopyFile | File Operations | Validate (the copy)
