CUSIP number is wrong

First post but long time Quicken user, though I'm not the wizard many of you are. I've come across a problem that is stumping me. I'm using Quicken Classic Deluxe (R65.29, build 27.1.65.29) on Windows 10.

My Vanguard Windsor II Investor shares were automatically switched to Admiral shares by Vanguard back in November. In Quicken, I clicked Update Transactions and the transfer went smoothly, showing the Investor shares removed and the Admiral shares added.

However, whenever I've updated transactions in Quicken since then, Quicken tells me there is a discrepancy between Vanguard and Quicken, and I see Quicken has added Investor shares back in. I can manually change those transactions back to Admiral shares, but I shouldn't have to do that.

I'm certain I've found the problem - Quicken shows the CUSIP number for the Windsor II Investor shares as 922108304. That is actually the CUSIP number for Admiral shares, according to Vanguard's website. Quicken doesn't show any CUSIP number for the Admiral shares.

The issue is that the CUSIP number is not editable in Quicken. I've tried manually downloading a QFX file from Vanguard's website in hopes that would correct the mismatch, but that ended up with the problem of the installer looking for the Quicken.msi file, which is an entirely separate problem that I see others have gone through.

So in short, how do I get Quicken to have the correct CUSIP numbers for both of my Windsor II shares?

I appreciate anyone's help and time.

    Hello @kopje cat,

Thank you for reaching out! The CUSIP typically cannot be edited by users, but there are ways to correct it if it's wrong. This advice from these earlier discussions may be helpful:

Please let me know how it goes!

Thank you Kristina, I think removing the checkmark for "Matched with online security" on the Windsor II Investor shares did the trick. I then Updated Transactions, and the Security List now shows the correct CUSIP number for my Admiral shares. Quicken didn't ask me to match the security, it all happened automatically. There is no CUSIP number shown for the Investor shares, but I presume that is because I don't currently own any Investor shares.

The Update Transactions I did today was for 12/24/25 - 1/03/26, which did not include any Windsor II shares. The last Windsor II transaction I had was on 12/17/25 (already in Quicken). So I may not know with certainty that it's all corrected until there's another Windsor II transaction. But at this point I don't see any reason to think there will be any further problems.

Thank you very much, as well as Jim_Harman & q_lurker for their previous posts!

To all: I believe, but cannot confirm, the the underlying issue is more subtle. I suspect when the new Admiral shares showed up in his file, Quicken applied the Admiral CUSIP to the existing (in Quicken) Investor class security, overriding the prior CUSIP for that security. I suspect Quicken compared the first XX characters of the 'new' Admiral class security, found that character string matched the security name already in Quicken (the Investor class version) and decided the new Admiral shares were supposed to be the same as the existing security. Somewhere in the past history of Quicken we have seen that flaw raise its head before.

@kopje cat I am assuming you are relying on the security names downloaded by your financial institution (Vanguard?). I'd be curious to see a comparison of those two security names as downloaded, assuming you have not changed them.

As long as you now have the correct CUSIP applied to the correct Quicken security, you should be fine going forward.

@q_lurker I think you are probably right on the origin of the problem. The transfer from Investor to Admiral shares initially went smoothly, and the Investor shares showed as "Removed". But the problem started at the next Update Transactions, and Investor shares showed up again. I then noticed I had originally (many years ago & I don't know why) named the fund "Windsor II", with no mention of the share class. I then manually renamed the returned Investor shares as "Vanguard Windsor II Fund Investor Shares", hoping that would solve the problem. It didn't of course, as I now know the CUSIP number had already been applied to the wrong fund. I would think Quicken would have used the ticker symbol which was correct for both funds, but apparently not.

So I'm sure this was user error on my part years ago (in the 90s?) that just recently came up to bite me. Thank you very much for your assistance!
