A category used for years has disappeared

I have a loan account category that I have used for tracking payments (split between principal and interest) but it quit working in August after years of successful use. It does not show in the category list but I can't add it because I get a response that it is a duplicate. Hidden categories are set to "shown".

What the....?? Anyone have an idea as to how I can get back on track?

    Try validating/super validating to see if that resolves the issue.

    Nope, did not help. I did both regular and super, had no related issues reported, "fixed" a couple unrelated transactions.

    I had a rare flash of inspiration and a suspicion popped up: the category name and the account name were the same. I changed the acount name (included the last 4 digits of the account number, didn't care) and lo and behold the category has magically reappeared and I can use it!

    What a crock. I guess if anyone else has the same issue this post might pop up and reveal the "cure".

    Now I just need to rebuild a few months of records.
