I am seeing some unrecognized Categories in my data file

Question

I ran Validate and Repair (validate file option) simply because I had not run it in a very long time and I got a few errors about a category named ACCT_14a4. However the log file also said everything was corrected and no mention of deleting anything.

I then ran Validate and Repair (validate file option) again and got a completely clean result.

I then looked at my Category List and I see the ACCT_14a4 category at the top of the list.

And if I look at the categories that you can select in the Categories tab of a Transaction report I see these 3 categories in the list of all categories:

* ACCT_14a4
* Unspecified Bill Presentment Account
* Tax Impact of 401(k) Accounts

But if I run the Transaction report on just those 3 categories for all dates in the data file the report comes up empty.

Anyone know what is going on and what I need to do to fix this issue ?

It is possible that those categories are showing up as part of a file-specific issue, but if you're not encountering any other issues in your file, going through file troubleshooting steps may be a lot of effort for very little payoff.

If you do want to try troubleshooting, since you already validated your file earlier, the next step would be restoring a backup from before the problem started, if possible.

@Quicken Kristina  I was able to delete the  ACCT_14a4 category because it appeared in the Category List.  However the other 2 categories do not show up in the Category List and thus cannot be hidden from there:

* Unspecified Bill Presentment Account
* Tax Impact of 401(k) Accounts

When I look in the Categories tab of a Transaction Report I also see these 2 categories and they are select-able but again cannot be hidden, i.e. unchecking the Show Hidden Categories check box does not hide these 2 categories.

However, if I switch to the Old Interface I can only find the Unspecified Bill Presentment Account category in the Categories Tab. The Tax Impact of 401(k) Accounts category is nowhere to be found in the Old Interface.

I do not remember ever seeing these 2 categories before in the New Interface. Do I possibly have some corruption in my data file?

Hello @cjim,

Thank you for reaching out!  As @UKR said, categories with ACCT_ or TEMP_ may have been created by a bug a few years back.

Quicken does have some mandatory categories that it shouldn't let you delete.  For more information, see this help article:

Unspecified Bill Presentment account & Tax Impact of 401(k) Accounts both look like categories Quicken may use behind the scenes.  If the categories aren't already hidden, you may want to make them hidden categories and leave them alone.  For information on hiding a category, please see this help article:
