How can I reconcile the securities listed in Quicken with my investment account?

Somehow, the list of securities and values in Quicken is not in sync with the list of securities in my Raymond James investment account. Is there a way to easily reconcile? What does the "Reconcile Shares" feature do?

Do you download from Raymond James? The Reconcile Shares feature compares the shares you have in Quicken to the shares downloaded from your broker. If any are out of sync you will get a notification of how many shares you are off by.

If you click on "Reconcile Shares" in an Investment Account you'll get a screen that tells you the Quicken Account agrees with the broker as to the number of shares of each security, or, if there are disagreements between the two, what the two balances - reported vs. Quicken - are and the difference.

That doesn't actually "reconcile" the two, you have to work through transactions in Quicken vs. the broker to figure out why you're in disagreement, and how to fix it.

Sometimes these disagreements are simply timing differences that will disappear with the next download, sometime they arise because a transaction or transactions haven't downloaded and you need to manually enter them, sometimes they arise because a download from the broker associated with a "corporate action", e.g., spinoff or something, hasn't accurately accounted for what happened and you have to figure out what downloads to delete and then enter correctly.

Yes I download frequently. For instance, my Raymond James account says I have 15 shares of Eli Lilly, but my quicken account doesn't even have that security.

then you need to find out when it was bought and most likely enter the transaction(s) manually to make them agree.
