I need some help with categories.
I have Quicken installed on two computers. The first one is my old desktop, and the second is my new laptop. The balances in my old computer are correct, while some of the balances in my laptop are missing transactions. I have a bank account, say ABC Bank, that after getting my new statement, I balanced my account in Quicken. I then exported the the bank file to a USB drive, and then imported it the bank file in my laptop. When I do this, it creates a new file, ABC Bank (2). When I open this file, a lot of the categories are either blank or are named as External Transfers 18 2, External Transfers 18 3 and External Transfers 18 4. How can I get it to copy and transfer the correct category name so I don't have to find and correct each one?

How did you do that export/import?
Because a Q backup is an exact duplicate of the original file … and when you restore that backup the restored file should be a duplicate also.

I used the Quicken File Export and Import tools. I would have thought they would have been exact but so many of the categories are not copying correctly. I keep getting error messages at the end of the import. It says there were 784 errors during import. Click to view the log file. When I open it, it says the log file also lists accounts that need to be re-enabled for transaction download. Some of the messages are:
The account name is already in use by another account - so it renames it to the account name (3).
The account name external transfers is already in use - so I get the external transfer 18 2, 18 3, 18 4 and now 18 5.
It is unable to find the category for transaction or transfer category.

I used the Q backup originally to transfer the data from my computer to my laptop, but I have had transactions disappear, so I have been balancing my computer files first and then trying to transfer the account to the laptop. I have wasted a lot of time trying to find missing transactions so I thought it would be easier to balance one Q file and then exporting and importing to the new one. But that hasn't worked out the way I thought it would.

Disappearing transaction is frequently associated with the use of QWeb and/or QMobile … and isn't known to have anything to do with Backup/Restore.
