windows 10, premier - Previous year state taxes [edited]
I am trying to assign a category to schedule A / state tax, prior year. That line item is not in the standard list, but earlier quicken documentation says it is under the extended list. However, I do not have buttons that show extended or standard list, nor, at the bottom of the standard list is anything that says extended list. I called support and they said that even though this showed up in the 2024/2025 documentation, the extended lists and that line item no longer exist. I find that hard to believe. I was looking at doing an uninstall and a clean re-install, followed by the mundo patch to force all the related files to update to the latest.

There is not a specific tax line item in Quicken for previous year state taxes. If you edit your previous year Category, it should look like this

Thanks, so it looks like "extended list" and "standard list" buttons as described in the 2024 documentation no longer exist. Nor does the tax line (i.e. prev year) exist any more. thanks again

my issue was I made a state payment in 2026 (before I filed) to be applied to 2025 and quicken won't let me do that - it worked fine for federal. I tried estimated qrterly but that wouldn't apply it either to 2025 in the tax planning tabs

Quicken really only deals with federal taxes, except it can track federal deductions for state taxes paid.
Check with your tax advisor, but generally you get the federal deduction for state taxes in the year they are paid, not the year they are credited by the state. Thus there is no need in Quicken to have a tax line item for previous year state taxes.
As you can see from my screenshot, I have a Category for previous year state taxes that uses the "Schedule A:State income taxes" tax line item.
I edited the title of your post to highlight your question

I downloaded and installed a new version of quicken on a laptop that never had it before. no extended list. also i notice that the scheduleA: state tax (description states that this also includes taxes paid for the previous year. In anycase, I don't see where any of this shows up in any of the tax reports - is this primarily for the planning tabs?
