I have tried to attached several receipts (PDF files) to transactions and they are not saving. Why not? I'm using Quicken Classic Business & Personal.

Process I Am Using

  1. Existing Transaction
  2. Click the Paperclip icon
  3. Click Add » Add File
  4. Select file from computer (PDF)
  5. Click "Open"
  6. Click "Done"

UPDATE: There is no error being displayed — THERE SHOULD BE.

On a whim, I edited the name of the file:

    • FROM: Kohls 2025-06-26 - Jake Curtains.pdf
    • TO: Kohls 20250626 Jake Curtains.pdf

And now the file is loading.

PLEASE: If a file name is causing a problem, the system should display an error message or alert.

I have seen similar issues with other programs where they will change the extension from what I designate to what is created if the name was "too" long. I'm not saying that Q doesn't have a problem, just that I've seen Windows mess things up in other programs.

I know in some situations, Q will not open a data file that is longer than 8 characters or has a space before the period. Doesn't make sense, but it sometimes happens. I've learned to keep my filenames fairly short, besides, it takes less typing.

It would be nice to get an alert/error so the user doesn't chase their tail for an hour :)

You could always start another post as an IDEA, stating the issue and what you would like to happen.

In the past, when working with MS-DOS batch files, there was a requirement to enclose long file names in "double quotes" so that special characters within the file name would not cause syntax errors when interpreting the command.
Maybe that's what's happening here … an old remnant to DOS commands.

And maybe that's what's also causing the recently reported "Error 5" when attempting to import TurboTax files into Quicken
