I downloaded my current American Express activity and almost every transaction shows the same (and incorrect) payee.

Thank you for letting us know you're seeing this issue. Since you mentioned it's the same incorrect Payee on all of the downloaded transactions, I suspect the problem is caused by an overly general renaming rule. You can check your renaming rules by navigating to Tools>Renaming Rules. If you see the problem rule, you can edit or delete it, as appropriate. To do that, click on the problem rule, then click the pencil icon to edit or the red icon to delete it.
To correct the transactions, right-click on each problem transaction and select the Revert to option.
