Loan Payment Reminder Problem

Long time user, currently using Windows 11, Deluxe R67.10.

Created a new offline Auto Loan. All went smoothly and the account was created as expected. Also created a payment reminder in Bills & Income. Clicking on enter to record the payment, results in an old paycheck reminder popping up instead of the loan payment.

I have tried everything I can think of to resolve the problem with no success. Ran validate, then super-validate, then copy template, restored an old backup and recreated the same issue in each case. I've also tried initiating the payment through the loan tab and the Bills & Income tab and both result in the same paycheck reminder. There are several other posts over the past year indicating a similar problem with a loan account. Would be curious if anyone can recreate the issue.

I was not able to reproduce the issue on my end, so I’d like to confirm a few details to make sure we’re aligned on the behavior you’re seeing:

When you go to the Bills & Income tab and select Edit for the loan payment reminder, does the correct information appear there?
Does it look similar to the example shown below?
If the old paycheck reminder is part of your manual reminders, have you tried deleting it to see if that changes the behavior?
Could you also confirm where your Quicken data file is currently located?

To find the file path, please open Quicken and go to File. At the bottom of the menu, the file with the check mark next to it is the one currently open. The full file path shown there will help us confirm the exact location.

Once you have a chance to check these, please let me know what you find. I look forward to your response.

Thank you for your response. Below are my answers to your questions:

Yes..when I go to the Bills and Income tab the screen looks like what you displayed above and correctly shows the transfer/payment that is expected.

2. The old payment reminder that pops up when I click "enter" on the loan reminder is an old paycheck from an account no longer used and is permanently closed in Quicken.

3. The file location is on my c: drive, here: "C:\Users\xxxxx\Documents\Finance\Quicken2026.QDF"

As a further test, I pulled up a very old backup from 3 years ago. Went through the same steps and got the same result.

Thanks. I called, shared my screen and walked the person through the entire scenario. The best they could offer is that I could enter the transactions and splits manually. Unable to determine why and how an old paycheck was being pulled up and did not note it as a software issue.

I reviewed the support ticket, and it indicates that the previous resolution was to delete the existing reminder and create a new manual one, which appeared to prevent the old paycheck reminder from reappearing.

However, it's not clear whether recreating the reminder from the Payment Details section of the loan account resulted in the same issue occurring again. Could you please confirm whether that process helped or if the problem returned afterward?

Additionally, to help us better understand what you're seeing, could you please provide a screenshot of the old paycheck reminder that is reappearing? If needed, please refer to this Community FAQ for instructions on how to attach a screenshot. Alternatively, you can also drag and drop screenshots to your response if you are not given the option to add attachments.

The manual reminder that the agent suggested did indeed work, but of course, it does not provide any loan calculations. I can do that and manually enter the principal and interest split each month. Creating the reminder from the Payment Details section of the loan account does result in the same issue occurring.

So as clarification, none of the steps actually resolved the issue other than I can choose to manually enter the loan principal and interest each month.

Here is an image of the loan creation and loan reminder being set up. All looks well and if I click on the split, it correctly shows the calculation for principal and interest (I've redacted the amount due):

Then I go to Bills and Income and find the first payment reminder:

Click Enter and I get an old paycheck from a former employer. But even that is odd because it is showing it entering into an account which this paycheck never went into. The account that this paycheck would have been for is now permanently closed in Quicken.

@jamacq just a wild guess - can you try Entering the loan reminder from the Bill & Income Reminders window instead of from the Bills tab?You can open the Bill & Income Reminders window using menu Tools | Bill & Income Reminders or by pressing CTRL J on your keyboard.

Thank you for the additional details and screenshots.

Since the issue persists after validating, super-validating, restoring backups, and recreating the loan reminder, I'd like to determine whether this behavior is specific to your data file or if it can be reproduced in a brand-new file.

Please create a new test file and set up a loan reminder there using the steps below:

NEW FILE

Choose File menu > New Quicken File.
Select New Quicken File.
Click OK.
In the File name field, enter the name of the new file then click Save (Don't use any of these characters: * ? < > | " : \ / (asterisk, question mark, left and right angle bracket, pipe, straight quotation marks, colon, BACKSLASH, FORWARD SLASH). Also, don't add the .qdf extension; Quicken does that for you).
Sign in with your Quicken ID. If you are prompted to create a Quicken ID but already have one, click Sign In under the Create Account prompt.
Select if you want to use Mobile.
Click Add Account and create a test account, then set up the loan reminder.

How to alternate between multiple files

Creating a new file will not affect your existing Quicken data file. You can switch between files at any time:

Click the File menu.
Look near the bottom of the option list.
Select the data file you want to open.

Once you've completed the test, please let me know whether the issue occurs in the new file as well. That information will help determine the next troubleshooting steps.

Thanks for your continued help. The good news is the problem is resolved.

I confirmed in my original file that the problem was still present. I then followed your instructions, created a new file, then created an offline checking account, an offline loan account and an associated loan reminder. It worked correctly, creating a loan reminder.

Then I went back to my original file and somehow the problem is resolved. The loan reminder is working correctly. Somehow your steps reset the problem in the original file.

I'm very thankful for your help but curious how this worked.

Update:

In an attempt to understand the problem, I attempted to recreate the scenario again and found that my previous account was not entirely accurate. The problem apparently was not resolved by creating the new file. What I found did resolve the issue was to create a second loan and associated second loan reminder in the original file. The second loan worked as expected while the first loan reminder was still pulling up an old paycheck reminder. I was able to resolve the issue by creating the second loan in the file and then delete the original loan. I have confirmed that it continues to work correctly.

Summary resolution: Create a second offline loan with a new name but same terms. Create the associated loan reminder. Then delete the first (original) loan. This has repeatedly worked. Perhaps this resolution will help to determine how this could happen. I know that other people have reported a similar problem here on the community. I hope that this workaround solution will help others.
