How to Reconcile Imported Accounts

I imported a lot of history from Quicken 2007 to Classic Deluxe. After some clean-up, all balances tied out between Q2007 and QCD. The primary checking account was reconciled in Q2007 through a date about 4½ years ago (all transactions have an ‘R’).

The reconciled status of the primary checking account and transactions apparently did not transfer to QCD. I know this because when I select Reconcile Account, the Reconcile window shows “This account has never been reconciled.”

What’s the best way to reconcile this account? I don’t want to reconcile the entire history of this account. I think the best approach is to reconcile the account as it is, before adding/importing recent activity. If it helps, I still have access to the Q2007 data file on an older Mac Book Pro running a macOS High Sierra VM.

I would try reconciling the entire account history to date in one reconciliation - you aren't required to reconcile one month at a time. Just grab the most recent statement & reconcile to that balance & date, and it should mark everything unto that date as reconciled. Of course, if there's a mismatch in the balances it's going to be really difficult to track down without reconciling in smaller chunks; if you don't want to bother trying to find the source of the error you can click on the Adjustment button in the reconciliation window to have it enter a balance adjustment transaction to make them match.

I'd recommend AGAINST "one reconciliation". If there's a mismatch, it's just this side of impossible to find it … while a SUCCESSFUL reconciliation only takes a minute or 2 and if there are mismatches it will immediately narrow down the month in which it occurred.

4.5 years times 12 months is 54 reconciliations, about 90 minutes of time.

Well, reconciling 30+ years of activity in the primary checking account turned out to be easier than expected, with one caveat.

There were 14 transactions that could not / cannot be marked as paid without causing an out-of-balance situation. Thirteen of the transactions are car loan payments; the fourteenth was some sort of zero-dollar transaction. Not sure what to do with the car loan payments but they're going to be permanent reconciling items. They're showing up in the monthly reconciliations as I add data from the last 4½ years.

Let's start with those car payments, because I suspect that if we figure one out, the answer will apply to the rest also.

HOW/WHY would they not reconcile? Was the amount in the register wrong? Were they dupes? What?

They're probably splits, so open the split and see if there's anything funky inside, such as a split line that has an amount but no category.

Have you reconciled the auto loan account? How did that work?

re: $0. IF that transaction is a split, open the split and see what's inside. It's would most likely be off-setting categories with a positive amount to one and a negative amount to the other … in which case you can just manually mark it as reconciled (UNLESS either of those offsets are actually transfers, in which case you'd need to look at the other side of the transfer also).

IF it's not a split transaction, you can just delete it.

When I said "everything tied out," I should have been more specific: The assets and one credit card account all tied out. Didn't think about the Car Loan account.

The reconciling items are all principal/interest splits are represent the last 13 payments that were due on the loan. It looks like these items are duplicates. There's also an odd split transaction transaction on the payoff date. It has the same total as a monthly payment (~$500). The split shows an almost $4,500 payment to Loan Principal, a ~$4,000 deposit to Uncategorized, and $9 of Interest Paid. I checked Q2007 and this transaction is not there. Guessing that something went wrong in the file conversion with the 13 monthly payments and that odd transaction was QCD's way of handling it.

My plan is to delete the duplicates and that final transaction.

The $0 reconciling item is not a split. It only has a date and a Category (uncategorized).
