Register Column Width

Question

I'm beyond frustrated with how the column width adjustments work.

This is a screenshot of the checking register. The Payment, Deposit and Balance columns were all excessively wide while the category, tag, memo columns were all crammed together and impossible to read.

I tried to adjust the size of the "Balance" column and that resulted in the column disappearing off the right side of the window.

This is a constant battle I have with Quicken.

Background:

* Windows
* I am using a wide screen monitor.
* I have Quicken open to the right, a Chrome window on the left.
* The Quicken window is open to the "default" size it opened to when it launched. It looks like it's the dimensions of the laptop screen.

If I drag this line to the right to decrease the size of the "Balance" column, it just shoves the column off the right side of the screen.

If I drag this line to the left, then the "Balance" column is ridiculously wide.

If I try to shrink the width of the "Deposit" column nothing adjusts

If I widen the window in an attempt to adjust the "Balance" column, there's this "dead zone" to the far right. But I can grab the right side of the "Balance" column and adjust it.

Category, Tag and Memo columns cannot be adjusted whatsoever. And this is often where I most need to adjust the column widths.

I just want the darn thing to adjust like Excel, where the user can control the column widths and not have unknown factors impacting what's feasible or not.

I think some of the column width - adjustment problems stem from the fact that there now are hi-res super wide screens and the old program code just can't handle it properly.

If you haven't tried this "display override" solution, please do so.

Last question:

Are you using Tags for any of your transactions?

If not, remove / deselect the Tag column from each of your register views and the remaining Category and Memo fields will get wider. Click the register columns icon (next to the Balance column header) to change the column layout of the register.

What I don't think people get about "Category, Tag and Memo" is that they aren't a normal Windows "concept".  No where in Excel (and problem any other application) will you find such fields.  The register is a custom component that Intuit created specifically for Quicken.  And one of those customizations is the two row mode.  When they did that, they decided that the secondary rows will be equally sized based on its "parent field", the one above it.  That is why these fields can't be changed.

I notice that even though a lot Quicken Mac users (especially the ones the migrated from Windows) have requested 2-line mode the Quicken Mac developers have pushed back on this since they don't want to go down that rabbit hole.  And there is a general concession that has been a good thing because since Quicken Mac is using the standard controls, they can do things like drag and drop to move columns around.

If you want to be able to size all of those columns, use 1-line mode instead.

As for the Balance sizing problem.  That problem is "sort of recent", years ago it didn't work like that.  And yes, it is frustrating.  I'm not sure why this started doing this.
