Same investment in more than one account (Q Mac)

I have several Brokerage accounts, many with duplicate investments. I used to be able to create a new security (Mutual Fund, ETF, Stock) and just give it a new Preface name. Something related to the Brokerage account, like AMP for Ameriprise, FID for Fidelity, etc. Now I can't seem to duplicate the investment. It points to what I already have and if I edit it then I lose the original. Any work around? Not sure why this changed as I currently have sometimes 3 of the same sticker with different prefaces to distinguish them.

I was able to create a new security but had to use the name as the symbol. When I try to change the Symbol to the correct one it crashes.

Is this Quicken for Mac?

While that is less relevant here, the more important question is why you are trying to differentiate the same security? It should have the same ticker/name in all accounts you hold it in.

Yes, Quicken for Mac. That is the section I am in. I have always thought if I list the same investment in more than one brokerage account it would not update properly, so I have created a preface of FID or TRP or AMP for those holdings to signify what brokerage account they are in. Then the update properly. I have been doing that for decades. If I don't have to let me know.

That thought ("wouldn't update") is incorrect. I hold the same stock in 2 accounts and the same funds in several (my account and wife's). And I use the exact same security to record those multiple holdings of a single stock/fund.

Where, in what account, I hold the security is irrelevant for recording the security.

Well, I can't explain the crashing-I just hope you completed the crash report when it happens. (I wouldn't repeat just to do that, though.)

Since it has been established a single ticker/name is all you really need, here is how you can correct: First, make a backup of your file just to be safe.

Then, go into the Security list and select two of the same securities, and then click on Merge Securities at the bottom of the window. (You can only merge 2 at a time.) It doesn't really matter what name you choose going forward as you will rename it at the end.

If this works correctly, then merge the last two together so that you have a single security. Once done, then rename that to the Security name sans the account prefix.
