Amazon Categorization should not use Hidden Categories

Over the past 20 years of using Quicken, some categories that I have used either have changed or become obsolete (ex. College Tuition for kids). I know I have many Personal Expense categories set as hidden, as they are no longer used. I did this so that if I went back and looked at some previous year, those transactions would not be in Everything Else.

It's too bad that Planning categories are not locked on an annual basis. So, is there a better way to get Quicken to ignore putting items in previous years' categories?

Setting up renaming rules and/or memorized payees that use the correct categories may help with the issue.

This is with Amazon which fills in the item purchased and then assigns a category. As an example, there is a hidden category named Food which I am not sure I ever used. But I use a category called Groceries since I count everything usually purchased in the grocery store (ex. Paper Goods, Soap…..). Recently, Amazon categorization has been assigning some items to Food.

I am going to rely on my annual backups for looking at historical data instead of my running account. Then, I can delete all of the hidden categories. I will see if this helps.

My running file has transactions that go back to 2001.

To clarify, is this the retail purchase categorization feature? If it is, then, according to our help article, Quicken's assigned category takes precedence over your memorized payee list. That may explain what you're seeing.

It is the Amazon categorization that is the issue. There is no visibility on what category that a purchase is assigned to. I merged two of the categories that were originally used by Quicken (Food and Household Supplies) into my Groceries and deleted them in a backup file. Doing the OSU again, the memo contained the name of the item, but they were no longer assigned to a Category. You have seemed to hard code an assignment methodology that specifically for me I do not use.

On a second issue, there are some transactions created via OSU for Amazon that the memo field was left blank. No item was put in it. For one case it was a bottle of Melatonin sleep aid.
