Request for an Phantom Bank Account

I am running W11 and Quicken R68.28. After the last release, Quicken shows this re authorization message when running One Step Update.

This VISA account is non existent, either in the Quicken database nor the relevant BofA access. I can click on the "Remind me next Time", and it will do the update, synching all the financial institutions.

How do I clear this error?

Thank you for letting us know you're seeing this issue! The most likely cause of that prompt is that Quicken still sees that account connected. To check for that, please navigate to Tools>Account List. If you have the option to Show Hidden Accounts, select that option.

Try to find that phantom account in the Account List. If you're able to find it, backup your Quicken file and deactivate the account.

No such account exists. The first thing I did was check for hidden accounts.

Since the account doesn't seem to be in your file, not even as a hidden account, the next step is to check for file-specific issues. I suggest that you try validating your data file. Please save a backup file prior to performing these steps.

Validate:

File

Validate and Repair File...

Validate File

Click OK

Close the Data Log

Close Quicken (leave it closed for at least 5 secs)

Reopen Quicken and see if the issue persists.

Due to conversion, aren't BofA customers supposed to change all their connections to the "Bank of America" financial institution name, instead of older names containing variations of the Bank of America name?

Since the "Validate & Repair" as suggested by @Quicken Kristina did not resolve it, I can think of another possible way of getting rid of this pop-up message, by going to

File > Copy or Backup File > Create a copy or template > Save Copy

This will create a copy of the data file with all accounts disconnected (and most likely this old/phantom account as well - hopefully). All online services such as bill pay etc. if you have any will also be disconnected as a result. It pretty much creates a completely offline copy of your Quicken data file. And then you will start using this new copy and reconnect your desired accounts and services one at a time - time consuming unfortunately.

I don't know if this process will clean up the database of the phantom account, but since it disconnects all accounts and services, one would think that it will do the same with the phantom account and hence eliminate the annoying message.

TIP: Before doing this, go to every account and make a note the opening balances of each account. One easy way is to write the amount in the memo field of the opening balance transaction. Or write it on a paper or notepad, whatever you prefer. Why do this? There is an old bug in Quicken where the opening balances could get altered sporadically after an account's deactivation and reconnection. Recently Quicken provided a workaround for it by creating an adjustment transaction if such issue resurfaced.

This is fairly involved process. There are 10+ accounts to reconnect. I can ignore the popup for the time being.

As @BK recommended, creating a copy of your file would force the phantom account to disconnect because it disconnects all connected services. I can understand why you wouldn't want to do that if there are any better alternatives. I reached out to my team internally to confirm what alternatives, if any, are available.

@Quicken Kristina , I was thinking of a shorter approach, that just maybe, if disconnecting only ALL of the BofA accounts might do the trick. If you could run this by your team please:

Disconnect ALL BofA accounts
Revoke Quicken's third party Access on BofA's website (this is very easy)
Run an OSU to see if the pop-up is gone (shows if the issue is even related)
Authorize, reconnect and link them carefully back in Quicken

Not as comprehensive as the File COPY approach but just "maybe" it will work? (Personally I'd go with the File COPY approach)

My team wanted to clarify: Is the account not in your file at all, or is it there, but as a closed account that shouldn't be connected?
