Quicken crashes after update R67.10

Screen shots are attached. It may be easier to look at my step by step with the screenshots on the Word doc attached. >> When Quicken offers an update, I always accept and install it. Sometimes it happens automatically when I've closed Quicken and then open it again; I seemingly have no choice then. At the end of June, R68.25 was released. After installation, when I tried to open Quicken, the logo would appear, the Quicken screen would momentarily appear with "File" & "Edit" visible on the top line and then the screen would go blank. After investigating QW's support page,

the solution some folks found to help was to reboot, uninstall and reinstall QW. This never worked. When reinstalling QW, when viewing Windows Task Manager, the process would hang up. I eventually called support and we were able install it by maneuvering data files and reverting back to R67.10. When R68.25 was announced, I tried to install it with the same result. Another lengthy call with QW support followed and we again reverted back to R67.10 and eventually got Quicken working.

My computer was off for several days and when I opened QW, it immediately installed R68.31 which caused the system to become unresponsive again. This is time consuming and not acceptable to have to jump through hoops like this. I'm afraid to install any new releases and concerned that the next time I close and then open QW, it will install an update that will require me to reinstall QW and a release from May to get it work.

Based on the information included in the logs you shared, it appears that your computer is running Microsoft Windows Vista. Can you please confirm if that is correct?

If so, this may be contributing to the issue. According to our Quicken System Requirements, the current version of Quicken is supported only on Windows 10 and Windows 11. Running Quicken on an unsupported operating system may result in unexpected behavior or functionality issues.

Please let us know if your operating system is indeed Windows Vista or if the information in the logs is incorrect.

Let's double check this: I think all Quicken "Setup logs" may show Vista family - if that is what you noticed in the OPs logs. I know you use QMac but do you have a QWin setup to check? (You will find it under help > Contact Support > Log Files > Setup Log > 4th line). I 'think' since Windows Vista, all versions of Windows after that including Windows 10 and 11 share the same foundational underlying Windows NT kernel version that is based on Vista - or something like that.

FYI, I am on a fresh (not an upgrade) install of Win11 Pro 25H2 and mine shows Windows Vista family as well.

Thanks Carlos. I saw the Vista reference in the log as well and have no idea why it's recorded that way. I use Windows 10 with the most recent update under Microsoft's Extended Service. The last update was a week or so ago. This PC came with Windows 10 and has never had Vista installed. You mentioned that you noticed I use QMac. I'm not sure where that comes from. I've used Quicken for Windows since 1991.

I tested this on a Windows 11 computer and found the same result; the operating system was also being identified as the Windows Vista family.

If you haven't done so already, I recommend following the instructions in the error message to completely uninstall Quicken, including manually removing the remaining installation folder from Program Files (x86). I suggest following the steps outlined in our Support Article.

To uninstall Quicken in Windows 10:

Click the Start button and open Control Panel (in Windows 10, it is located under the Windows System folder in the Start menu).
Select Uninstall a Program under Programs.
Locate Quicken in the list of installed programs.
Select it, then click Uninstall and follow the prompts until the process is complete.

After uninstalling:

Open File Explorer.
Navigate to C:\Program Files (x86).
Locate the Quicken folder, if it is still present.
Right-click the folder and select Delete.

Note: Deleting the Quicken program folder will not remove your personal Quicken data files.

Unfortunately, there isn't currently an option to disable automatic software updates in Quicken. If this is a feature you'd like to see added, I encourage you to create an Idea post in the Community so other users with the same or a similar request can vote on it. Ideas are also reviewed by our Development and Product teams in order to improve Quicken and implement new features requested by customers.

Just to clarify, were you able to get everything working correctly while using version R67.10? If so, I recommend contacting Quicken Support for further assistance. They can guide you through additional troubleshooting steps in real time or escalate the case if necessary to help you to update to the recent version.

Congrats on getting it resolved. I would be scared too! Some/many Quicken users on Win10 are having issues with R68.xx and therefore they are not updating beyond R67.10 until resolved.

While there is not an option within Quicken to disable automatic updates unfortunately, there is an alternative that you can (and should) absolutely take control of software updates using Windows UAC: I recommend that you change your Windows "User Account Control" setting to take full control of when you want to allow/block a specific update. Follow the steps in this comment:

Yes, I am up and running on R67.10. I changed my UAC settings as you suggested and will reject any changes Quicken has for new releases.

I appreciate your time and help with this. Oddly, this only happens on my main PC. It does not occur with my laptop or my wife's PC. I'm hopeful Quicken will address this soon. My experiences with Quicken has been very good over the years and have found them to be responsive to bugs and glitches.
