Why can't I add a second rule to an existing renaming rule?

I have been using Quicken for years and have depended upon the renaming rules. Recently, one of the businesses I use often has slightly changed the way the name is reported. I try to add a second rule to the existing rule, but it does not add. There is no error message.

Here is how my rules look:

The vendor sends the name containing the string "Smiths fuel", and this works. But now one of the vendors sends the name with a hyphen "Smiths-fuel". I click on the green + button and it opens the following dialog which I fill in:

Note that I have filled in "Smiths-fuel". Then I push the OK button, and my list still looks like the first upload. The rule does not contain the second option I just added. There was no error message.

This has been happening for the last few months. Based on some other suggestions I've seen, I signed out of my Quicken profile, exited Quicken, and then signed in again. This did not fix the issue. I am currently running version R68.28.

How do I get both versions of this string in my renaming rules?

Thank you for sharing the details of what you're experiencing and for outlining the troubleshooting steps you've already tried.

I tested this on my end, and it appears that Quicken does not allow you to create the subcondition because its matching logic treats spaces and hyphens as equivalent word separators. As a result, "Smiths fuel" and "Smiths-fuel" are interpreted as the same text, so Quicken prevents the duplicate condition from being saved.

Instead of selecting the payee and pressing the + to the right of the name, select the "Add a rule" option at the bottom left of the window. That should allow you to add additional rules. Try that please.

I have had the same challenge maker using - with names of accounts and categories in Quicken. Used to help in alphabetizing. Is there a Quicken hierarchy list for alphabetizing somewhere.

Since you mentioned using special characters, such as hyphens, to influence the alphabetical sorting order of your accounts, I wanted to share a built-in feature that may help simplify account organization.

Instead of using naming workarounds, you can manually arrange your accounts directly in the Account Bar. Quicken allows you to drag, drop, and organize your accounts in the order you prefer, regardless of their account names.

How to Rearrange Your Account Bar

Open the Rearrange Panel: Click the Settings (gear) icon at the top of your Account Bar, or right-click any account/group header and select Rearrange accounts.

Move Items Around: You can click and drag accounts to move them up and down, or even move them into entirely different groups.
Use Menu Options: If you prefer, you can click the three dots icon next to any account or group to select Move Up, Move Down, Move to top, or Move to bottom.
Save: Click Done when you are happy with the layout

Thank you for responding, @Quicken Laura. This is highlighting a problem. Since Quicken treats the space and the hyphen the same when storing the strings, shouldn't it treat them the same when parsing the downloaded transactions? But I find it does not. If I download a transaction for "Smiths fuel", it gets renamed as expected. But if I download a transaction for "Smiths-fuel", it does not get renamed. So it appears that Quicken is being inconsistent with when space = hyphen and when it does not.

Using Smiths-Fuel for the renaming rule works for me.

In fact, I just using "Smiths fuel" for the rule and it works too:

@Chris_QPW I am inferring from your screen captures that you created or edited a QFX file to test the renaming rule. Are we confident renaming rules work the same for QFX, EWC, and EWC+ imports?

If they don't then that is definitely a bug.

But to directly answer the question there is no way for me to be 100% sure, but it has always worked that way before.
