Tags started showing split when no tags are assigned in the register entry

Hi,

I am using version Classic Deluxe ver 27.1.68.1. Starting with this build I noticed that when I input a split category into a check register the tags field has the word split in it. When you place focus into the tags field and click it brings up the split entry.

The reports appear fine meaning that entries without a tag are correct, but I cannot place a tag entry into the tag field. If I open the split and enter from that dialog nothing appears in the tags in the register.

My goal:

* if no tags are assigned to a register entry, then the tag field should be blank. 
* if I have a single category register entry, then I should be able to assign a tag (this works)
* if I have a split category entry then I should be able to assign a single tag or open the entry in the split screen and assign individual tags to each category* In this case If I have multiple tags to a single record entry using the split, I would expect the tag field to reflect split.

Is this a new bug, new functionality, or a past bug needing to be re-opened?

Yes, that is correct. With split transactions, tags are assigned at the individual split-line level rather than at the transaction level. If you want all split lines to have the same tag, you would need to assign that tag to each split line individually.

Regarding the Tags column displaying "Split" even when no tags have been assigned, this is how Quicken is currently designed to work. The register uses "Split" to indicate that the transaction contains split details, rather than reflecting whether tags are present or absent on those split lines.

We understand your expectation that the Tags column would remain blank when no tags have been assigned, and we can see why that would make sense. If you'd like to see that behavior changed, I encourage you to create an Idea post in the Ideas section of the Community.

Is the correct behavior if I have a transaction which has multiple categories and I want all categories to be assigned to a single tag I must open the split and assign that same tag to each individual category? Also, if I do not want to assign a tag to ANY category why does it reflect in the column for tag <split>? I expect the UI to be blank.

If this is correct then yes, I will open an idea.

Thanks for the detailed post and for explaining the scenarios you tested.

I checked this behavior against previous versions, and the Tags field displaying “Split” for split transactions is consistent with how Quicken has handled these transactions. A split transaction can contain multiple category lines, and each split line can have its own tag assignment. Since the register view is showing the transaction as a whole rather than the individual split lines, the Tags column cannot display the tag details from the splits and uses “Split” to indicate that the transaction contains split information.

When you open the split transaction, the individual split lines are where tags can be reviewed or assigned. If no tags have been entered, the tag fields will remain blank. If tags are assigned to the split lines, they will appear there.

This is not a new behavior introduced in version 27.1.68.31, but rather the expected handling of split transactions. That said, if you would prefer that the Tags column remain blank in the register when a split transaction has no tags assigned, you are welcome to submit an official Idea for that enhancement. The Idea section is the best place to share feature suggestions and allow other users to vote and comment on the request.
