if I upload a dividend transaction in a QIF file for a security where the "qualified dividend" choice is yes, will the dividend be marked as qualified?
And if that is not currently/yet the functionality, how would I populate this qualified dividend field in a QIF file?
Limited testing shows that a "dividend" type uploaded with a security that has the "qualified dividend default" field = yes, the system uses the _QualDivInc category and not the normal _QualDiv category. Hopefully this stays true. If anyone else test this would like to know your result.
But I wish this were also true when "Tax Free" was selected on a security and resulted in transactions using the IntIncTaxFree and DivIncTaxFree categories…..!
Ok well I'm talking to myself ;-) but maybe someone will run across this and it'll be helpful.
After I updated several security's to Tax Free = yes, I now see in reports that dividends posted to those securities now show up in the DivIncTaxFree category in reports. Marvelous!!
@DL# yes logically, if you code the security to default to qualified dividends then any dividends that post for that security should be qualified dividends. But if you see this happening when you upload a QIF file to Quicken, that is a happy surprise. I don't think there is any coding in the QIF file that would designate a qualified dividend. So I am not sure how what you see could be happening. Unless there is a mechanism or coding in Quicken that looks at the security type and the transaction type to determine "on the fly" if the dividend is a qualified dividend, when the transactions are uploaded and posted.
@DL# as an aside, I wonder why they only added this qualified dividend default to stock securities? There are other securities, such as mutual funds or ETFs, that would maybe benefit with this default?
@Sceptic For a discussion of the stock-only requirement for dividends to default to Qualified, see
That discussion has been closed. Maybe we need an Idea or two for improvements and corrections.;
Thanks for this. I just noticed this option missing from MFs when I was trying to figure out how it would be possible to for a qualified dividend to get coded from a file.
To me, this is not really an enhancement that needs to be voted on. It is an enhancement that just needs to be done. Why just do it half-way and leave it unattended for so long? It would seem to me that if they can do the coding for stocks, then they can expand it for MF and ETFs.
@DL# I wanted to circle back to you with some additional information about downloading qualified dividends from a QIF file. My original answer to you was inconclusive. It does look like there is some coding in Quicken that will default a dividend transaction to "qualified" if the stock security is coded as such. So your observation of being able to download a qualified dividend is entirely plausable.
The issue for ETF and mutual fund QDI may be more cosmetic than functional.
I temporarily edited Vanguard Total Stock Index Fund Admiral shares (VTSAX) to be a stock type and checked the QDI box. I then changed it back to a mutual fund and manually entered a dividend. It automatically flagged the transaction as QDI as soon as I clicked in the dividend amount field.
I'll verify it behaves the same when a dividend download hits the account later this month.
The simple fix is to make the QDI box visible for all of the Types that can generate QDI. It seems to be available and functional in the underlying table for all types of securities.
