How to change WithdrawX to Withdraw

Having trouble changing a transaction type for monthly IRA withdrawal: some say WithdrawX, or Cash Transfer, to non-linked checking account, others say Withdraw to category same non-linked checking account. I want to change all to the latter, to be consistent. However, if I do make the change, it does not overwrite the original transfer, instead it makes a duplicate cash transfer that I then can't delete or change in the non-linked checking account.

Any X type action is a transfer to another account. So a WithdrawX is a transfer to another account, while a Withdraw uses a non-account Category.

What happened with the money in real life?

In either case, the money is 'transferred' to the non-linked checking account. I want to change from WithdrawX classified as a transfer, to a Withdraw and send that amount to the checking account. But as I mentioned, that creates a new deposit in the checking account instead of overwriting the first.

@rupleys When changing the WithdrawX to Withdraw, change the category to the transfer account in brackets [ ]. A Withdraw would also need a Payee. If you try to change a WithdrawX to a Withdraw without adding the category (transfer account) at the same time, it does what you described.

@rupleys This MIGHT be related to a bug that I've previously seen and reported. My primary checking account is actually a MMF and with that brokerage account I use the "Show Cash in a checking account option".

SO, any dividends paid in that account should not appear in the brokerage account but instead only in the associated checking account.

HOWEVER, sometimes a DIV (which should be a DivX) will be recorded in the brokerage account. I've discovered that if in the brokerage account I click on the erroneous Div and click EDIT, and then Save the transaction (without any changes) it will correct itself to a DivX.

You might try that with your erroneous Withdraw (s/b WithdrawX) transactions.

I tried again to edit the transaction in the IRA account, changed the WithdrawX to Withdraw with the transfer checking account in brackts, and again it added a second deposit. I decided to delete the old transfer deposit and it did so. Now I click on the new deposit and ask to see the matching transfer. Instead of taking me to the IRA transaction, it tells me

@rupleys I am sorry that didn't work for you. I tried it on my own accounts and it worked. The only thing is I found that any transfer transaction with an "X" can be touchy and behaves strangely sometimes when you try to edit it. Changing them can also cause your account register to become unstable.

You mentioned that the checking account was not linked. If so, just curious to know why you used WithdrwX instead of a Withdrawal or a Cash Transfer Out?

Did you happen to convert your accounts from MS Money? That is another reason why changing these "X" transfers is not working.

If the suggestions that @NotACPA also do not resolve this issue, I would recommend that you keep things as they are. For the transfers that are "broken", I would recommend doing a data file validate. The validate log will tell you which transfers it tried to fix and if then it was deleted. Print the log or save it. It will only log these transfer and deleted account errors once.

The only other thing I can suggest is to contact Quicken Support even before you try the data file validate. They can work with you remotely and go through some troubleshooting steps and see exactly what is happening and determine why the transfers break when you try to update them.

Yes, I think I need official Support. I've done validate, and super validate on the data file, no problem. I lost the link to the checking account over a year ago, as the data file was corrupted by Microsoft OneDrive, and Support helped me get the data file back, but not the link!

I want to use Withdraw instead of other options because that allows me to do a split transaction; I've used that option in the past to make the transfer, add the IRA RMD withdrawal to a separate Income category (then a 3rd junk category to balance that!), that was recommended to me years ago to facilitate a profit-loss accounting.

@rupleys I was going to ask you if the checking account was once linked. But you just confirmed it and what is happening now makes sense to me. Those WithdrlX transactions are still connected to the linked checking account that is no longer there and has been restored/replaced with the unlinked checking account. Internally the transfer links are broken. In hindsight, what should have been done is those broken transfers deleted and replaced. The first file validate that was done after the restore of the checking account over a year ago would have told you which transfers were broken and needed to be deleted and replaced (not just fixed). But, as I mentioned, the validate log only gives you this list of errors once and then after that it is lost.

Yes, I think your best bet is to go back to Quicken Support. Maybe they will have a way to identify these broken WithdrlX transfers and get them deleted and replaced so you can change them to a Withdrawal transaction.
